As an ardent fan who has followed Ray Fisher’s journey through the highs and lows of Hollywood, I must say that his performance in The Piano Lesson is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s like watching a phoenix rise from the ashes, a testament to his resilience and talent.
In Netflix’s period drama, The Piano Lesson, Ray Fisher not only charmed audiences on screen but also gave a performance that is generating some initial Academy Award speculation. This role seemed to provide a refreshing change for Fisher, who has been embroiled in controversy over the past few years.
In 2017’s Justice League, the man portraying the cyborg character was embroiled in a public disagreement with filmmaker Joss Whedon and ex-DC Films president Walter Hamada. However, this production presented an opportunity for him to put that behind and move forward.
In an interview with Variety Studio, the actor shared that he was able to express his feelings of tension effectively by embodying his character in The Piano Lesson. “I must acknowledge the assistance I received,” he stated, “from August Wilson.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “In the intricate tapestry of that masterpiece, within the depths of its character, there was an echo of Lymon Jackson that resonated with me. I believe we all carry a spark of that essence.” Fisher elaborated on how his character’s innocence, a quality often missing in adults, provided a breath of fresh air for him to portray. “For my part, it served as a refreshing change, almost like a palate cleanser. I’ve experienced my fair share of personal and professional hardships, and this role offered me a chance to step away from that,” he confessed.
This project aided him in reaching a point where he chose to let go of the past and progress forward. Expressing ‘I prefer not to dwell on this’ and avoiding feelings of resentment towards past events and showing readiness to advance, reflects aspects of his personality.
The movie, titled after August Wilson’s book, centers around the Charles family in 1936 who are grappling with a valuable family artifact – a piano. Some suggest selling it for financial benefit, while others strive to safeguard their ancestral heritage. As suggested by the official summary, the film delves into the importance and preservation of family lineage.
Besides Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Brooks, Michael Potts, and others make up this impressive cast. The film “The Piano Lesson” is set to hit theaters on November 8, with a streaming release on Netflix starting from November 22.
