As a dedicated follower of Barry Keoghan‘s career, I find his personal experiences deeply resonating with his on-screen performances, adding a layer of authenticity that is truly captivating. Having grown up without a father figure myself, I can relate to Keoghan’s struggle to portray the role of a father in Bird, and it makes the emotional intensity between Bug and Bailey all the more poignant.
Barry Keoghan recently opened up about some profound thoughts during a candid conversation with Entertainment Weekly. In the film “Bird,” he portrayed an emotionally charged character, depicting the complex bond between 12-year-old Bailey (played by Nykiya Adams) and her sole guardian, Bug (Keoghan).
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In an intimate conversation during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Keoghan shared that his portrayal of his on-screen character was deeply personal. Growing up without a father figure, my own relationship with my son deviates from the conventional father-son bond.
Back in August 2022, I, Keoghan, was overjoyed to welcome my little bundle of joy, Brando, into this world with my former partner Alyson Sandro by my side. But let me tell you something, folks, being a dad on-screen has been quite the challenge for me. You see, I never had a role model to guide me in fatherhood off-camera, so bringing that authenticity to life on set feels a bit alien at times.
According to Saltburn alum’s perspective, love doesn’t necessitate a source or inspiration to spring forth; instead, it’s innate and untainted. Interestingly, his approach to parenting seems to be more about guiding his sons differently than his daughters.
Additionally, he disclosed that the movie “Bird” portrays a bond reminiscent of sibling relationships between characters Bug and Bailey. Given his unconventional upbringing without a paternal figure, he thought this representation was most authentic to their relationship dynamic.
I found myself nodding along when Barry pointed out that the sibling relationship of brother and sister strikes a chord with many contemporary parents. It feels like an apt portrayal of kinship in today’s society.
Keoghan disclosed that the shooting of Bird occurred sequentially, and he was unaware of the overall narrative as he was informed about his individual scenes exclusively. In simpler terms, he hadn’t had the chance to watch the entire movie because he only got his scenes a day or two before filming began.
Consequently, upon viewing the movie at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, he wasn’t fully aware of its plot. Yet, his joy soared when it earned a seven-minute long standing ovation, as reported by Evoke.
The movie will premiere at Irish theaters on November 8, 2024, Friday. Could it win an Oscar? Time will tell.
