As a dedicated follower of Selena Gomez‘s career, I can’t help but feel a surge of admiration upon witnessing her emotional recollection of landing the coveted role in Emilia Pérez. It’s not every day that we get to see such raw and genuine reactions from our favorite stars, especially when they are as accomplished as Selena.
As a fan of Selena Gomez and a devoted follower of her career, I can’t help but feel excited for the special moment she is reminiscing about this year. Having grown up watching Selena on screen, it’s incredible to see her land such a significant role in the 2024 crime musical “Emilia Pérez.” The fact that this film premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival just adds to the anticipation and awe surrounding her achievement. I have no doubt that Selena will deliver an outstanding performance, as she has consistently proven herself to be a versatile and talented actress. This role marks another milestone in her impressive career, and I eagerly await its release.
32-year-old celebrity shared a heartfelt video on Instagram, which included several slides and showed her shedding joyful tears upon learning about winning the role of Emilia Pérez. The special moment was captured by Gomez’s friend Gabby.
In a video posted on August 19th, the former Disney star was seen playfully lounging on a couch, teetering on the edge of tears and hiding her face with her hands. “I can’t believe I got the movie! I’m about to cry; I really don’t want to,” Gomez emotionally expressed.
With great effort to hold back tears, her friend motivated the singer to express her emotions before she cheerfully exclaimed, “This is going to be fantastic, Gabby!”
The carousel included photos from the shoots and behind-the-scenes. The second slide showed Gomez adorably hugging lead star Karla Sofía Gascón, while the next photo was a sweet snap of a pouting Gomez in front of the film’s closet. The Only Murders in the Building star wrote in the caption, “When I found out, I got the part for @emiliaperezfilm and the sessions in between loll.”
As a long-time fan of Selena Gomez, I must say that the slides showcased some intriguing and captivating behind-the-scenes moments from her latest project. The first slide featuring Selena with fake blood on her face immediately caught my attention, as it hinted at a grittier, edgier side to her character. The second slide, where she poses with a fur jacket and the script peeking into the frame, gave me a glimpse of the dedication and hard work that goes into filming, as well as the glamorous aspect of being in the entertainment industry. I’m excited to see how these images translate into her upcoming role and can’t wait to see more behind-the-scenes footage!
At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival held on May 18th, Emilia Pérez made her debut and was met with a prolonged applause. (Variety’s report)
Previously, Gomez described her experience as the spouse of a drug cartel boss as one of the toughest tasks she’s encountered. During an episode of the Smartless podcast in January, she mentioned that she frequently draws upon her own hardships and struggles to empathize and convincingly express emotions while acting on set.
“She mentioned a time that stood out for her, when she initially had to go to rehab and depart, which she recalled from a scene in the French crime-comedy directed by Jacques Audiard where she seemed to be left on her own. For her, crying was like a good sensation, and being able to utilize it in her career felt worthwhile.”
In the movie, Gomez assumes the character of Jessi Del Monte, the spouse of drug cartel head Emilia Perez/Manitas, played by Gascon. Gomez devises a clandestine plan for Manitas to undergo gender reassignment surgery, with the legal support of Zoe Saldana’s character Rita, a lawyer, enabling Manitas to transition into a woman and securely step away from the drug trade.
The movie is developed from an opera script written by Audiard, which shares the same title, and it’s also based on a novel named “Ecoute” by Boris Razon, that was released in 2018. This novel served as additional inspiration for the adaptation.
Edgar Ramirez, Adriana Paz, Agathe Bokja, Anable Lopez, Mark Ivanir, James Gerard, and Eric Geynes make up the cast for the Emilia Perez series that will be streamed on Netflix starting November 13, 2024.
