As a lifestyle expert, I find Andrew Garfield‘s courage and vulnerability to be truly commendable. His ability to share his personal grief with the world, through a conversation with Elmo of all people, speaks volumes about his emotional intelligence and resilience.
In various upbeat roles, including Tik, TIk… Boom! and The Amazing Spider-Man, we’ve come to know Andrew Garfield well. Yet, there’s another side of him that resonates deeply – his insights on grief. Recently, Garfield, who experienced a recent loss of his mother, was featured in a video conversation with the beloved Sesame Street character, Elmo.
In this viral social media video, the actors from Hacksaw Ridge and Sesame Street surprised fans, with Garfield sharing a poignant moment from his past. The star of Under the Silver Lake opened up to Elmo about the loss of his mother, which occurred in 2019.
For the unaware, Garfield’s mother, Lynn, passed away after a prolonged struggle with pancreatic cancer.
In the October 18th video posted on X (previously known as Twitter), Elmo inquired about the well-being of the 41-year-old actor.
As they sat side by side on the porch, Garfield expressed his immense excitement and joy upon seeing him.
In the subsequent exchange, The Social Network actor then enquired if Elmo was indeed paying attention to his message. Once Elmo confirmed this, Garfield moved both Elmo and those viewing the clip with his words.
Andrew Garfield expressed that he’s been deeply feeling the absence of his mother, mentioning that it wasn’t too much time since she had sadly passed.
In a gentle tone, the actor playing Silence told Elmo that there was no need for an apology, as it’s perfectly normal to feel sad about missing someone.
Afterward, Garfield expressed that sadness can be considered a blessing, referring to it as “a beautiful sensation” since it indicates that one deeply cared for someone when they’re missed.
In a subsequent remark, the actor shared that whenever he feels nostalgic for his mother, it’s the tender embraces and snuggles they shared that come to mind. He expressed joy over the cherished moments he made with his mom, as well as the entire family, including his brothers.
When I feel sad because I’m missing her, it’s a reminder of how much joy she brought into my life,” Andrew Garfield told Elmo. “This way, I can appreciate her happiness and still feel that longing for her.
The actor also stated that Elmo was his mother’s favorite.
During the shooting of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Garfield had to temporarily abandon the set due to the sad news of his mother’s passing in England, and thus was compelled to be with her at that time.
