‘I Always Wanted To Be A Dad’: Michael Keaton Says Choosing His Family Over Big Movie Roles Was ‘The Correct Choice’

As an admirer of Michele Keaton, I find his life choices truly inspiring. His decision to prioritize family over career, earning him the nickname Dr. No for turning down parts, is a testament to the values he holds dear. While it’s tempting to ponder what might have been had he accepted those roles that turned into massive hits, Keaton’s unwavering contentment with his choices is commendable.

As a dedicated follower of Michele Keaton’s career, I can’t help but reflect on some pivotal moments where he turned down movie roles that eventually became blockbusters. However, looking back now, he expresses nothing but contentment with his choice to prioritize family life over professional success. In an interview with PEOPLE, Keaton humorously admitted that he “could have made a lot more money” if he hadn’t turned down certain lucrative roles, earning him the nickname “Dr. No” for his reluctance to accept parts. Yet, his decision seems to have brought him nothing but happiness in the long run

Without explicitly mentioning the titles he turned down, Keaton mentioned that he made that choice to spend more time with his son Sean Douglas, now 41, and more recently, his grandkids, River, 7, and Maggie, 5. “You look back, and you go, ‘Zero regret. Zero, zero,’” he admitted.

Keaton openly admitted that there was never a moment of hesitation, not even when the movies were successful. He stated, “The decision was always the right one. I’ve always wanted to be a father.” Adding to this, he explained that he chose to spend time with his son Sean during his childhood because “that’s an opportunity that only presents itself once.” For Keaton, movies might come and go, but his son, who was “only going to be a child for a short while,” was a “no-brainer” in terms of prioritizing him over professional obligations

Regardless of refusing certain roles, Keaton achieved great success, as seen in blockbusters like the 1989 Batman and Beetlejuice. His impressive body of work is noteworthy

In 1983, Keaton and his former wife, actress Caroline McWilliams, gave birth to Sean. The actor mentioned that they, along with McWilliams (who sadly passed away in 2010 due to cancer, following their separation a decade earlier), made an effort to keep their son down-to-earth, but found that he required minimal guidance in this regard

As a devoted admirer, I proudly claim my role as an exceptional father. I heap immense praise on his mother for her extraordinary parenting skills – truly a remarkable woman. A fantastic, fantastic, fantastic mom, she is, and that’s the reason our son turns out to be such a fine young boy

According to the actor, his son possesses an innate goodness that shapes who he is as a person. While parenting may have influenced this, Keaton believes that some people are simply born with qualities that make them good-hearted. “There’s something in some people,” he said, “that’s just in them.” The actor attributes the rest of his son’s goodness to his inherent nature, noting that he has always been a kind and thoughtful individual

Keaton’s upcoming film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to release in theaters on September 6.
