HYRULE WARRIORS Says Link and Zelda Are ‘Just Friends,’ Fans Aren’t Buying It

The idea of a romantic connection between Link and Zelda is a long-running fan theory. While the games never directly confirm it, many players sense a deeper connection between the characters. However, a recent description in the English version of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment calls their relationship ‘just friends,’ which has sparked outrage among fans. Many aren’t buying it, and believe Nintendo is downplaying the obvious connection between the two heroes.

This quote comes from a journal entry written by Princess Zelda’s companion, Lenalia. She describes Zelda smiling and saying she was acting like a knight—and a friend—from her past. This has sparked debate among fans who ship Zelda with Link, with many questioning the meaning of ‘friend’ in this context.

People are sharing their reactions on X (formerly Twitter). Interestingly, the original Japanese version of the game doesn’t use the word “friend” at all, which has made many question things even more. This has sparked a renewed and intense debate about the real nature of Link and Zelda’s relationship – a discussion that’s been going on for over ten years.

The Evolution of Link and Zelda

For over 40 years, fans have debated whether Link and Zelda have romantic feelings for each other in The Legend of Zelda series. While never explicitly stated, many believe they do, pointing to moments like holding hands in Spirit Tracks, Zelda kissing Link in Oracle of Ages, and even sharing a bed together in Tears of the Kingdom as evidence.

As a longtime fan, I’ve always found it interesting that Nintendo has deliberately stayed vague about the connection between these two characters. The closest we’ve ever gotten to any real confirmation came from a quote producer Eiji Aonuma gave in an interview with IGN, but even that wasn’t a clear answer!

When asked about the connection between Link and Zelda, Aonuma explained that the development team intentionally leaves much open to interpretation. He stated that the Zelda series isn’t about the developers dictating a specific story or meaning; instead, they put everything they want to communicate into the game itself. What players take away from that experience – how they feel and what they believe happens – is ultimately up to them.

Now that a live-action movie is being made, it will be fascinating to see how Nintendo and Sony Pictures portray the characters’ relationships. Hopefully, the movie will confirm what fans already suspect. Currently in production, the film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027.
