‘Hunt for Gollum’ Creators Eager for Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn Comeback

As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan with a heart that beats for Middle Earth since I first stumbled upon those enchanting pages back in the day, the news about ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ has me absolutely thrilled! The prospect of Viggo Mortensen returning as Aragorn, one of my all-time favorite characters, is almost too good to be true.

Anticipation is growing within the realm of “The Lord of the Rings,” not only due to the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series titled “The Rings of Power” or the upcoming animated film, “The War of the Rohirrim.

There’s been a lot of excitement lately regarding the upcoming ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ a movie that’s being actively developed as a live-action production.

Title ‘The Pursuit of Gollum’ might involve another appearance by Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, yet his participation is contingent upon several crucial elements.

During an engaging conversation with The Playlist, a significant member of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series’ creative crew, Philippa Boyens, disclosed some fascinating insights about the movie.

The story takes place immediately following Bilbo’s spectacular 111th birthday celebration and preceding his perilous adventure through the Mines of Moria, which aligns with the occurrences detailed in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring.’

The tale begins as Gandalf dispatches Aragorn on a quest to locate Gollum, a being in possession of perilous information regarding the One Ring.

Boyens, who’s worked on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, voiced her aspirations regarding Mortensen’s potential comeback.

Indeed, it’s entirely Viggo’s decision,” she pointed out, highlighting the collaborative aspect of their work style.

The conversations encompassed not only Boyens, but also Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson; these individuals are equally excited about the possibility of Mortensen wearing the Ranger’s cloak again.

During the discussions, the possibility of using digital makeup instead of AI tech to depict a younger Aragorn was brought up, highlighting the team’s dedication to maintaining authenticity in their work.

Ultimately, whether Mortensen accepts the offer or not largely hinges on the excellence of the script and the richness of the character tailored for him.

If Mortensen chooses not to repeat his role, Boyens stated they would continue attempting to include him, perhaps to assist in handing over the character to a new actor. However, this choice is not imminent, as Mortensen has not reviewed the script yet.

The movie intends to provide a glimpse into Gollum’s past, revealing the depths of Tolkien’s storytelling and showing how the character’s destinies become entwined.

Even though he’s aware of the final fates of several characters, Boyens thinks that having this historical understanding can make the storytelling more engaging, providing a fresh perspective on the sequence of events that eventually led to the grand adventure.
