Hugo Weaving Reveals Whether He Would Come Back to the World of ‘The Lord of the Rings’

As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of Middle-earth, I must say that hearing Hugo Weaving‘s decision to stay away from The Lord of the Rings franchise leaves me with a mix of feelings. On one hand, it’s disappointing to know that Elrond, a character so integral to the saga, may not return. On the other, I can’t help but remember the infamous Mortal Engines debacle and understand Weaving’s reluctance to revisit that collaboration.

Just recently, I shared some exciting news about a upcoming movie slated for release in 2026, where the legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson will be back in the fold for the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise, this time stepping into the producer’s chair. The title of this new adventure has been unveiled: it’s “The Hunt for Gollum.” To make things even more intriguing, we found out that none other than Andy Serkis himself will be directing this film and reprising his iconic character. This is all part of a grand strategy to resurrect the Lord of the Rings film series and expand upon Jackson’s groundbreaking work.

It seems that a journey back to Middle-earth is just around the corner, and we’re eagerly anticipating the film’s release. However, with time still stretching ahead of us, there isn’t much detail available yet.

Indeed, this situation has been fueling speculation about possible cast reunions. Now, while it’s clear that Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen have expressed their wish to revisit the movie, there’s also a question mark regarding another actor’s potential return to the franchise. That actor is none other than Hugo Weaving.

Hugo Weaving, as we all remember, embodied Elrond in both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” series, making him a constant presence throughout the franchise. His part was less extensive in “The Hobbit,” yet he remains one of the significant characters from the saga. Since the upcoming movie is a prequel, it presents an excellent chance to revive this character once more. However, we wonder what will transpire?

During an interview with GamesRadar+, actor Hugo Weaving shared his thoughts about potentially reprising his role in the Lord of the Rings franchise:

On a personal note, I’ve grown tired of that situation. For over a decade, I’ve enjoyed my time in New Zealand intermittently. I did return to collaborate with the same team, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, on a project called Mortal Engines, which was expected to be their next major franchise. Unfortunately, it didn’t take off as planned. Therefore, I don’t anticipate being asked to revisit Middle-earth again.

Elrond is eternally youthful, while I am growing older. Among the characters in The Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit, Elrond stands out as one of the rare few who continues through all three series. However, when we revisited certain scenes for Lord of the Rings, I was conscious that I had aged more than previously. Filming parts of The Hobbit was beginning to feel a bit absurd. Despite my affection for this franchise, I have no intention or wish to participate in it again.

It’s unfortunate, it appears, that fans who were anticipating Ian McKellen’s return as Weaving might be disappointed. However, it’s important to note that Elrond, like any character, does not age in the story, while McKellen does in real life. Yet, technology exists today to address such concerns. Nevertheless, it seems that the primary concern isn’t about aging, per se.

It appears that Weaving’s collaboration with Jackson and Walsh on the film “Mortal Engines” wasn’t particularly pleasant, and it looks like he isn’t keen on working with them again in the future, which is disappointing.
