As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of industry experience, I must confess that few movies have left me as thrilled and captivated as Deadpool & Wolverine. The sheer amount of effort poured into this project by its creators is nothing short of astonishing.
Having followed the production closely, I can attest to the fact that the film’s success was far from guaranteed. With multiple story pitches rejected and a seemingly insurmountable challenge of blending Deadpool’s irreverent humor with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s grandeur, it’s remarkable that this collaboration even came to fruition.
What truly sets this film apart is the unexpected phone call between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, a serendipitous moment that breathed new life into the project. The resulting buddy road-trip movie, inspired by classics like Midnight Run and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, offers fans an exciting and fresh take on these iconic characters.
It’s fascinating to imagine what could have been if Reynolds’ quirky ideas, such as a Deadpool road trip with Margo Martindale or a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-esque romance, had come to fruition. However, I believe that the final product is a testament to the creative process, reminding us that sometimes the best stories are those born out of collaboration and compromise.
In closing, I’d like to leave you with this thought: if only Deadpool could travel back in time to prevent Bambi’s mother from being shot, we might never have experienced the magic of Disney’s animated classics. But hey, at least we got a kick-ass Deadpool-Wolverine movie instead!
The team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine turned out to be a massive success this year, raking in more than a billion dollars at the cinema, fueling anticipation that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) still has much more to share. Fans have been thrilled ever since the movie was first announced.
Worldwide audiences were captivated by the making of the film, causing sleepless nights for Reynolds due to leaks and spoilers. However, the third installment of Deadpool nearly didn’t materialize – not because there was a lack of initiative.
Previously, Reynolds had disclosed that he proposed numerous plotlines for the joint venture of Deadpool and Wolverine, but Marvel Studios rejected each one. Among these proposals were a storyline reminiscent of Rashomon and an escapade set during Christmas involving Santa.
In a recent conversation with Indiewire, Levy confided that they had nearly abandoned the project for Deadpool 3. They found themselves struggling to blend Deadpool’s casual demeanor with the grander, more somber atmosphere prevalent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Suddenly and unexpectedly, Hugh Jackman reached out to announce his readiness to reprise the role of Wolverine. This call dramatically altered the course of events. What was initially planned as a farewell meeting soon transformed into an exhilarating ideation session with Marvel’s Kevin Feige.
Jackman’s enthusiasm ignited a novel concept: a buddy-themed road trip film centered around themes of legacy, remorse, and atonement, drawing inspiration from films such as ‘Midnight Run’ and ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’. This fresh perspective breathed new energy into the venture, significantly influencing its narrative structure.
Starting from that phone call, this duo opened up the narrative for us, transforming it into not just a journey reminiscent of “Midnight Run” and “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” but also a film exploring themes of legacy and two troubled characters seeking redemption through their mutual connection. This shift greatly inspired our writing process.
Reynolds shared that before the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine could take place, he proposed several humorous concepts, but these were ultimately discarded. However, it seems that both fans and himself are likely more content with Deadpool being part of Disney’s Marvel Universe as opposed to featuring in their animated series.
Before Shawn came on board, I had already proposed a number of Deadpool movie ideas to Kevin, ranging from 12 to 16. One of them was a low-budget Deadpool film called “Deadpool at Sundance,” where Deadpool embarks on a road trip with Margo Martindale. This concept didn’t require any special effects; it focused solely on character development. I also pitched an idea called “Deadpool Goes Hunting, in which the hunter who killed Bambi’s mother encounters Deadpool, and they develop a romantic relationship, similar to Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. However, I was informed that we should avoid using Bambi in any Disney-related projects, which is quite understandable.
