Hugh Jackman Preferred a Different British Actor as Wolverine Replacement, But It’s Not Possible

As a fan who has been following the X-Men franchise since its inception, I can confidently say that Hugh Jackman‘s portrayal of Wolverine is nothing short of iconic. His recent performance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was yet another testament to his prowess as the adamantium-clawed mutant. However, age catches up with us all, and it seems that a replacement for Jackman’s Wolverine is imminent.

Hugh Jackman has played the role of Wolverine for an impressive 24 years, making it hard to imagine anyone else taking over the part. His latest performance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” further proved his skills at the character, although Ryan Reynolds joked that Disney might keep Jackman as Wolverine until he turns 90. However, such a scenario is unlikely. With a new crop of mutants being introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems probable that a change in actors for the role of Wolverine is imminent.

For quite a while now, numerous actors have been proposed as possible alternatives, yet it was Jackman who mentioned a specific candidate several years back as his pick for the role.

In an interview during the press junket for the movie “Pan”, Hugh Jackman expressed to MTV UK that if 20th Century Fox were to replace Wolverine after his retirement following “Logan” (2017), he believes Tom Hardy, an English actor, would make a great successor. Although Jackman thinks Hardy is perfect for the role, he doesn’t want the choice to be made too hastily.

It’s an intriguing query that hasn’t crossed my mind extensively. I get asked this quite frequently, and I often find myself reluctant to make the studio’s job easier by providing an obvious successor. However, I do have one more project left on my plate, and I suspect they’re already discussing potential replacements behind closed doors. Some talented actor might be waiting in the wings, likely younger than me. Tom Hardy could potentially step into my shoes quite well.

While Tom Hardy would undeniably be an exciting pick, there’s a complication: Hardy is already within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played Venom in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” This could potentially complicate the idea of him playing Wolverine, unless Marvel opts for the multiverse strategy to introduce him as a different character. Previously, this approach was used when Robert Downey Jr. reprised his role as Doctor Doom.

Supporters have proposed Henry Cavill as a possible candidate for the role of Wolverine, and he briefly showed up in a version called “Cavillerine.”
