Hugh Jackman recently shared a hilarious story from his early stage career that left fans laughing.
The actor, famous for his role as Wolverine and his work on Broadway, shared a funny story about a mistake he made while performing in a 1990s Australian production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on December 10th, Hugh Jackman shared a funny story about playing Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. He accidentally had a small wardrobe malfunction – a tear in his tights – while lifting co-star Paige O’Hara, who played Belle. Concerned the audience would notice while he was wearing red tights, he quickly tried to cover it up. “I thought, ‘Uh-oh,’” he remembered.
I recall Belle looking over my shoulder and asking what was happening because I’d suddenly stopped singing and was just pacing around.
Jackman described a difficult moment during the song’s climax. He joked that he had to choose between hitting a challenging high note—and potentially ruining his pants—or failing to reach it and embarrassing himself. Ultimately, he decided to go for the note and successfully delivered it, describing the feeling as exhilarating.
For a second, he believed he’d narrowly escaped a problem. “I glanced down and couldn’t see anything,” Jackman explained. “I was confused, thinking maybe the tights were acting like a wetsuit. I even started laughing, convinced my boot was full of…well, something unpleasant.”
The crew actually did notice something was wrong. He explained that a dresser backstage was staring at his crotch, and when he glanced down after the song, his pants were soaked. He realized the liquid had seeped through in the few minutes after he finished performing.
Since then, Jackman has continued to succeed in theater, even recently starring alongside his now-girlfriend, Sutton Foster, in a Broadway revival of The Music Man. Looking back on the earlier experience, he playfully said, “Nothing could be more embarrassing than that!”
