As someone who has spent countless hours observing and admiring these magnificent creatures, I find myself utterly fascinated by the resurgence of the salmon hat trend among orcas! It’s as if we’ve traveled back in time to the late 80s, with our marine friends reprising their iconic fashion statement.

It seems that Orcas, previously known for sinking luxury yachts, are now concentrating on personal matters. They’ve revived an ancient whale fashion trend from over three decades ago, which is now the latest craze in ocean style. The popular trend this year is sporting a dead salmon as a headpiece once more.

It seems that Orcas, or killer whales, have been rummaging through their parents’ belongings and appeared to really enjoy the findings. An intriguing account was brought to light by ScienceAlert, where researchers observed a group of these whales off North America’s west coast carrying dead salmons on their heads. This peculiar behavior hasn’t been witnessed for 37 years. The unexpected return of such an unusual act has sparked some significant and crucial inquiries. First, “What in the world is going on?” Second, “This is truly puzzling, but what’s the explanation behind it?

It seems no one can definitively explain this, but here’s what we know: The peculiar behavior began in the northeastern Pacific in 1987 when a female orca started toting a deceased salmon on her snout. Soon, other whales near Puget Sound followed suit. However, by 1988, this fishy habit had already gone out of fashion among the orcas, and they abandoned their salmon headgear as swiftly as they adopted it. Yet, surprisingly, this practice has resurfaced recently.

In 1987, one orca chose to adorn herself with a deceased salmon as if it were a hat. After this, orcas from her group and even others started imitating this behavior by wearing dead salmon on their heads too.

Is there any particular reason we’re resurfacing this behavior now? Some researchers suggest it could serve a purpose like storage or be a sign of intelligent animals playing around.
