Star Rail continues to be an entertaining yet occasionally exasperating test for players. Whether it’s the goal of acquiring every star initially or a personal mission like achieving this within one cycle, gathering strong teams for this mode is the reason behind accumulating all those characters and cultivating their optimal Relics.
In the recently launched MoC – Gambler’s Plight (released on August 4, 2025), it seems that a diverse and extensive roster is handsomely rewarded: I’ve utilized no less than six distinct teams across the eight combat challenges spanning from Stage 9 to 12, which is more than in any previous MoC.
This version of the game mechanic stands out because the current trick, being a Damage-Over-Time (DoT) effect, is broadly applicable, even though it’s not typically associated with such effects. Consequently, virtually any team can leverage the additional damage dealt to an enemy marked with debuffs, making it feel less like the game mode is promoting a specific character that was recently or soon to be introduced, and more about encouraging strategic play without pressuring players to make purchases.
Let’s take a look at how I’ve been doing well in the present Model Organism Challenge (MoC) and check if there might be some useful insights for you to earn those stars.
During the initial phase of this level, Archer thrives thanks to an abundance of Quantum Weakness and a skill-centric kit, which allows him to capitalize on the stage’s bonus effectively. As far as you possess some Quantum Damage, navigating through this half should prove manageable.
In simpler terms, Firefly appears to be an excellent choice for the second stage, given it uses Fugue instead of Trailblazer (Harmony). I wholeheartedly suggest a Break DMG team to anyone finding this challenging, as this team composition is particularly effective against The Past, Present, and Eternal Show.
In my current setup with Lightning DMG, I’m primarily using Acheron and Kafka, as Jing Yuan is unavailable and Sunday is missing. Consequently, these two characters have to perform the main roles in this scenario. Although Kafka was initially designed to amplify her Damage over Time abilities, the recent updates also enhance Acheron, since more Follow-Up Attacks lead to increased debuff infliction, which speeds up the charging of Acheron’s Ultimate. While it might not be the most efficient combination, they possess enough power to complete the task at hand on this level.
In the second part of this battlefield, The Herta thrives, but a squad consisting of Break DMG teams like Firefly or Rappa would also excel here. Interestingly, they could be a more suitable choice due to their energy reduction abilities. These enemies’ energy reductions can prove quite bothersome for The Herta, who heavily depends on her Ultimate. I find the way she effortlessly erases the entire playfield quite appealing.
Having plenty of Wind Weakness presents the perfect opportunity to unleash Saber and Excalibur against any nearby enemies. Alternatively, characters such as Blade or Feixiao would also work well in this situation. If you have a Black Swan team with a DoT ability, that could be another viable option for this half.
As a dedicated fan, I can attest that taking down Flame Reaver isn’t a walk in the park due to his robust defenses and formidable attack capabilities. Typically, my strategy involves wielding The Herta or Castorice, as these weapons offer versatile targeting options, allowing me to effectively tackle Flame Reaver and his duplicates, reducing his destructive power significantly.
Gambler’s Plight – Stage 12
- Team 1: Saber, Bronya, Cipher, Huohuo
- Team 2: Castorice, Trailblazer (Remembrance), Silver Wolf, Lingsha
- Cycles: 10 (3/3 Stars)
1. Teams that thrived during the initial phases of Stages 10 or 11 are likely to perform well in Stage 12. Svarog isn’t one of the most formidable adversaries you might encounter, but his Auxiliary Robot Arm Unit has the potential to disrupt your strategy occasionally, thanks to a bit of randomness (RNG).
For me, the toughest part of this Model Course (MoC) was undeniably the latter portion of Stage 12. The reason being, I didn’t have Phainon in my team and my only Physical Damage 5-Star character is Clara, who isn’t particularly efficient at swiftly eliminating enemies under time constraints. However, having a diverse roster proved to be quite beneficial in this situation.
Initially, I used the Archer composition in Stage 9 similar to what I had in Stage 9, but it turned out to be too fragile and was destroyed before reaching Aventurine. I then pondered over using the Acheron team, but given its current state, I wasn’t confident about securing a full set of stars with it. Then, I recalled that Silver Wolf can be effectively utilized beyond Mono-Quantum compositions due to her recent buffs. Replacing Cipher with Silver Wolf on Castorice’s team addressed the issue of Aventurine lacking Quantum Weakness, but it was a tight call, right up until the last attack before the turn counter exceeded the critical limit. Kudos to Silver Wolf. Kudos.
As a gamer, let me tell you, I’m not typically one to whine about health point (HP) inflation, but this character is something else! He just keeps on taking dragon breath attacks like they’re nothing. Yet, it’s been quite a while since I’ve had this much fun in Heroes of Sword and Rune (HSR). The versatile combat mechanic and diverse array of enemies make each battle an exciting challenge.
In every instance, your unique strategies are likely to vary from the ones provided here, as everyone has distinct characters, gear, and preferred team combinations. Keep in mind that it’s unnecessary to meticulously clear each challenge, because frankly, it doesn’t make a difference. Instead, focus on achieving three stars on every level to collect those Stellar Jades.
