On October 27, 2025, Honkai: Star Rail updated its challenging endgame mode, swapping out the Pillar of Genesis with the new Memory of Chaos: Category Mistake, offering players a fresh set of battles.
This updated formula makes characters and their summons hit harder, and also adds a burst of True Damage to all enemies at the beginning of each round. The more summons you have active, the more damage will be dealt.
Okay, so here’s the deal: those Memosprites of Remembrance are definitely going to be super helpful in this situation. But something I just realized is that summons, like Jing Yuan‘s Lightning Lord, also activate those stage effects! That’s a big thing to keep in mind when I’m putting my team together, because I need to factor those summons in to get the most out of everything.
Just like before, I’m going over how I beat MoC: Category Mistake to see if I can share any tips that might help you with the difficult challenge.
Throughout this MoC run, I’ve focused on boosting team buffs as much as possible, especially by using characters who can summon allies. This Castorice team is perfect for that strategy. Trailblazer (Remembrance) helps Castorice with buffs and slightly controls turn order, Evernight deals high damage while also sacrificing her own health to speed up Castorice’s Ultimate, and Lingsha provides consistent healing and Break damage bonuses. Because they all have summons, they maximize the additional damage and buffs.
Teams focused on dealing Ice damage, especially those built around Herta or Jingliu, will easily overcome this challenge, as will teams that utilize Quantum abilities.
Before Version 3.6 gave us the free character Dan Heng – Permansor Terrae, my team was pretty much set with just Jing Yuan and the characters I already had. So, naturally, I wanted to use him! As those who read my previous guide know, I love Huohuo, but I decided to try Permansor Terrae instead for this run to take advantage of his stage boost, and it actually worked out great. I did miss Huohuo’s help with charging Hysilens’ Ultimate, which caused some trouble later on, but Permansor Terrae handled the defense really well without needing any Skill Points, which gave Black Swan more flexibility. And because his boosts focus on Attack, he was a perfect fit for my damage-over-time team.
Teams focused on Break damage, those that rely on Counters like Clara or Yunli, or squads built around Phainon are all likely to succeed here.
Category Mistake – Stage 10
- Team 1: Castorice [E1], Trailblazer (Remembrance) [E6], Evernight, Lingsha
- Team 2: Kafka [E1], Hysilens, Black Swan, Permansor Terrae
- Cycles: 1 (3/3 Stars)
This stage doesn’t offer much new, as both my teams can easily exploit the enemy weaknesses. Focus on using Quantum units first – I recommend a team with Archer, Sparkle, and Silver Wolf, or Cipher if you don’t have Castorice.
The second part of this challenge is best tackled with characters who deal Physical damage, particularly teams built around Phainon. While a team focused on Feixiao’s follow-up attacks can also win, it might take a bit longer. If you have Hyacine and aren’t using her earlier, she’s a great choice for this section – the stage bonus significantly boosts the damage of her companion. And as we saw before, Saber is effective against the android enemy as well.
Category Mistake – Stage 11
- Team 1: Kafka [E1], Hysilens, Black Swan, Permansor Terrae
- Team 2: The Herta, Jade, Trailblazer (Remembrance) [E6], Lingsha
- Cycles: 4 (3/3 Stars)
The first part of Stage 11 is designed for teams that focus on Damage over Time (DoT) or hypercarry strategies, especially those led by Jing Yuan or Aglaea. I easily chose to use my DoT team because Aventurine isn’t too difficult to beat when everyone can deal area-of-effect damage for the dice game. Plus, Permansor Terrae’s shields are surprisingly strong.
The Banacademic Office Staff that show up later in the fight can be frustrating because they drain your energy. Luckily, I was able to rely on Herta and Lingsha’s strong attacks to keep enemies vulnerable, preserving my own energy. With the stage’s damage boost, Lingsha becomes incredibly powerful—she can effectively function as your main damage dealer alongside the Harmony Trailblazer and Ruan Mei.
A Firefly or Rappa Break DMG team would definitely be my second choice to tackle this stage.
Category Mistake – Stage 12
- Team 1: Castorice [E1], Trailblazer (Remembrance) [E6], Evernight, Lingsha
- Team 2: Kafka [E1], Hysilens, Black Swan, Permansor Terrae
- Cycles: 9 (3/3 Stars)
There are several effective strategies for defeating Flame Reaver and the other enemies. I chose to use a team built around Castorice to maximize those helpful buffs, but teams focused on characters like Herta, Aglaea, or Jing Yuan can also do significant damage, even with Flame Reaver’s high health. I did have some close calls with Evernight, as her health drain can quickly become a problem if you’re not careful, and Flame Reaver hits hard, so be mindful of that.
DoT, featuring Supreme Daniel, faced Evernight’s challenging new boss for the second half of the story – this was their fourth attempt. Phainon continues to be a reliable option, working well with teams focused on dealing Break damage or Archer setups that use Silver Wolf to apply Quantum Weakness. However, the Archer strategy can be a bit fragile.
It took a while to defeat both bosses, and I think the lack of energy regeneration from Huohuo slowed down our damage-over-time team. However, Permansor Terrae performed better than I expected – he provided excellent shielding, didn’t use many skill points, and was really helpful in reducing the bosses’ physical resistance. If you’re having trouble with this Master of Calamity challenge, I recommend building him.
My main advice is simple: don’t worry too much about short-term gains. Concentrate on achieving victory over ten rounds to earn the biggest rewards, and consider anything before that a pleasant extra.
