HoYoverse has announced that Genshin Impact will journey to the region of Nod-Krai rather than the frigid tundras of Snezhnaya, starting with Update 6.0, which follows Version 5.8. This autonomous territory will present a stark contrast to the lands we’ve previously explored, and our Traveler character will be drawn into it.
In the upcoming storyline, “Song of the Welkin Moon,” Nod-Krai will be present with players for approximately a year’s time. Throughout our previous explorations of Teyvat, clues about its unique three moons have been subtly revealed, and these threads will ultimately converge in this new location.
The creators of Genshin Impact believe there are numerous unresolved plotlines and untold stories in Teyvat before the main narrative reaches its peak. As a result, Nod-Krai will serve as a platform for these narratives to unfold. Additionally, it offers the developers an opportunity to try out new elements, such as having several key characters appear on the map, enabling player interaction.
In the words of Genshin Impact’s combat designer, Nod-Krai is reminiscent of locations such as Gotham City from DC’s universe or Crossbell State in Falcom’s Trails series. This area serves as a hub where various factions can coexist and engage with one another in a harmonious and organic manner.
Unlike the other areas in Teyvat, which draw inspiration from real-world cultures and locations, Nod-Krai stands out as a distinct entity. It’s not a nation, but rather a region with its own unique identity shaped by the factions within and the peculiar perils of Teyvat. Some parts may resemble real places, such as cliffs and fjords evoking regions like Iceland and Norway. The developers cite World of Warcraft’s Howling Fjords and The Witcher 3’s Skellige Isles as models for Nod-Krai’s terrain.
In Nod-Krai, players will come across Varka, the Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius, who is conducting an investigation. However, they may also run into the Fatui Harbingers, dispatched to the region by the Tsaritsa, the Cryo Archon, for a significant mission. Additionally, there are local factions with interests in Nod-Krai’s future, such as the Frostmoon Scions, a spiritual group dedicated to safeguarding lunar secrets.
Furthermore, we have the Voynich Guild, the Lightkeepers, and, for those acquainted with The Witcher series or folklore enthusiasts, the enigmatic Wild Hunt.
It seems that Nod-Krai was the initial area affected by the Abyss after the destruction of Khaenri’ah, making the Wild Hunt forces stationed there some of the oldest and most formidable. These forces are counteracted by the Lightkeepers, an order resembling the Night’s Watch from Game of Thrones, who strive to combat them.
It’s clear that during their trip to Japan towards the end of last year, the Genshin Impact team held conversations with renowned developers such as Hidetaka Miyazaki from FromSoftware. These discussions focused on addressing the challenges that come with a shifting playerbase and the need to adapt a game that’s been around for nearly five years in the market. These dialogues served as additional motivation for the team to be innovative and implement changes, some of which players will witness in Nod-Krai and the upcoming versions leading up to it.
