As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and film aficionado, I find myself utterly enthralled by Todd Phillips’ unique take on the Joker. Having grown up with the Dark Knight and his arch-nemesis, it’s fascinating to see their dynamic reimagined through such masterful storytelling.
In one instance, we’ve seen Bruce Wayne in Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker universe, and it’s been more than enough to put a smile on our faces. Now, Todd Phillips, the director, has shared insights into how his main character might respond to the presence of Batman in his interpretation of Gotham City.
Although it’s still too soon to see Batman and the detective in action together, their paths will inevitably cross at some point in the future. Hinting at a possible encounter, the director of Road Trip disclosed that the Joker from his film harbors admiration and respect for the character of Batman.
Speaking with IGN, I shared that Arthur Fleck, a character who harbors resentment towards the wealthy, would undoubtedly be left spellbound if given the opportunity to meet his sworn adversary. Additionally, I offered insights into our portrayal of the Joker, played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix. Unlike previous depictions in comics or other adaptations, this Joker is unique and brings a fresh perspective to the character.
The film’s director commented that Arthur seemed to be drawn to relaxed men, but he himself is not one of those easygoing individuals. As for Robert De Niro’s character, Murray Franklin in the initial movie, he exuded an air of relaxation.
In addition, Todd Phillips mentioned that Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, likely saw the men from his workplace as individuals who were comfortable and content. However, Fleck respected the Dark Knight because he could never achieve an easy or relaxed state, according to Phillips.
Although it would be exciting to imagine a future encounter between Phoenix’s Joker and Batman, the chances seem slim since the director has made it clear that a third installment in the Joker series is unlikely.
He also stated that he would be interested in watching a Batman movie involving his Gotham and the character of Joker, which would have a 10 to 15 years of time jump.
Following the tremendous success of the initial release, Todd Phillips is now presenting Joker: Part Two, titled “Folie à Deux.” In this sequel, Joaquin Phoenix returns to his role as the Joker, and joining him is the incredibly gifted Lady Gaga. Known for her roles in House of Gucci and her hit song Always Remember Us This Way, Lady Gaga will portray Harley Quinn in the upcoming film.
As the director for those impressive films, Todd Phillips also contributes as a co-writer for both “Joker” and its sequel, “Joker: Two Shots of Madness.
Joker: Folie à Deux will release in theaters on October 2, 2024.
