As a devoted Yellowstone fan with years of binge-watching under my belt, I must say I’m both excited and saddened by the news about John Dutton (or “Johnny Cash” as we fans affectionately call him) not being in season 5. While I understand that Kevin Costner has other commitments, it feels like losing a beloved family member who’s been with us through thick and thin since day one.
This fall, the fifth season of the Paramount Network show Yellowstone will be available, and they’ve been tantalizing fans on social media with behind-the-scenes photos and videos. Interestingly, images showing Kevin Costner, who portrays John Dutton, a key character in the storyline, were absent from the released previews.
One snap showed power couple Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) standing tall in an embrace. Meanwhile, the former’s sibling/rival Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) held a presser in another released image. Another photo showed Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) alive and well after their fatal car accident.
It hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but there’s a possibility that Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, could suffer as a result of the violent feud between his children Beth and Jamie on the show.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly last June, Kevin Costner, famous for Dances With Wolves, revealed that he won’t be part of Yellowstone season 5 because of his dedication to the Horizon film series. He explained his departure by saying, “It was simply the right moment to transition and do so as smoothly as possible from something that held significant value for me.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor expressed that he chose to step away because he found the situation too “dramatic.” He further mentioned that making the decision was not difficult for him. Essentially, he felt it was time to move forward and leave the topic behind, stating, “It was essential to declare, ‘Alright, I don’t want to discuss this any longer. It’s time for a change.'”
Despite enjoying the five seasons of the show, he felt it was time to pursue other opportunities. He further clarified by saying, “Let’s eliminate any doubt or speculation.” Kevin Costner also thanked his fans for their support and promised to bring more projects in the future.
The ongoing situation or conflict that the actor repeatedly mentioned might stem from the speculated disagreements with the creator, Taylor Sheridan. Yet, Sheridan himself dismissed these rumors and admitted to feeling let down by Costner’s departure. Additionally, Sheridan asserted that Costner’s other professional obligations were likely the cause of his leaving the project.
