In their most recent Marvel movie, Thunderbolts, Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh introduced a fresh character from the MCU: Bob, also known as Sentry or The Void, played by Lewis Pullman. However, director Jake Schreier disclosed that they had to deviate from the comic books in regards to Bob’s portrayal, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home playing a partial role in this change.

During a conversation with Marvel, Schreier revealed that the filmmakers of No Way Home were considering a re-telling of Sentry’s complex history. In the end, Holland’s 2021 movie saw Peter Parker asking Doctor Strange to wipe memories about him from everyone’s minds worldwide to prevent a multiverse catastrophe.

In the style of a comic book character named Sentry, there is a resemblance to the idea of memory erasure, which forms part of his backstory. It was discovered that Bob is an old, overlooked hero who obliterated the world’s memories to imprison his darker counterpart, the Void. Schreier felt it would be repetitive to retell this story again so soon after Spider-Man’s saga.

Instead, Thunderbolts reimagined Bob as a discarded experiment from the secretive O.X.E. program, whose memory was partially wiped out. Unlike previous portrayals in Marvel comics, where Sentry interacted primarily with other established heroes, Schreier opted to center the film on the character’s internal struggles.

In simpler terms, he pointed out the psychological struggle symbolized by the Sentry and Void duo, which embodies the internal battle between goodness and evil within a single person. As Schreier delved into the Sentry comics, he identified with the character’s lingering pride.

In my professional opinion as a lifestyle expert, there’s an undeniable air of arrogance about him that’s causing a ripple of unease among those in his circle. It’s striking and, to me, incredibly impactful, which was my final takeaway from the film.

In addition, Pullman pondered over the intricate aspects of his character representation. Later, both the actor and the Marvel team focused on presenting Bob as a single person grappling with immense mental pressure.

Pullman stated that the situation wasn’t about assuming multiple identities or suddenly transforming into an entirely different individual. Instead, it was about exhibiting various facets and aspects of a single person.

In the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, as reported by The Direct, Lewis Pullman’s character from Sentry will make a return, despite an initial alteration in his origin. Furthermore, hints about his potential connection to Marvel’s revamped Fantastic Four can be seen in either a post-credits scene of Thunderbolts or The New Avengers.
