How To Watch The Crow Movies In Order Of Release? Watch Guide Explored

As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for all things cinematic and a personal timeline that spans over three decades of movie-watching, I must say that The Crow franchise has left a profound impression on me. Each film, while not directly related to one another, captures the essence of vengeance, loss, and rebirth in its unique way.

The Crow is a collection of five movies centered around a Gothic superhero concept. These films have roots in James O’Barr’s graphic novels, telling the story of characters who suffer a tragic fate, only to be brought back to life by a guiding crow, with the purpose of taking revenge against their killers.

The series kicks off with the film “The Crow,” where Brandon Lee played the main role. Despite subsequent movies in the series not doing particularly well financially or receiving positive reviews, they successfully conveyed the gothic atmosphere.

Each of the five films in the series may not follow a direct narrative path, but they all revolve around a common theme: characters who are killed and brought back to life. While these movies don’t have identical storylines or characters, with the exception of the 1994 film The Crow being recently remade, this is an excellent opportunity to rewatch the entire series and indulge in some gothic nostalgia, especially given that a new version of the original movie has been released and it marks its 20th anniversary.

Let’s take a chronological look at the The Crow franchise from the first to the fifth movie.

1. The Crow (1994)

The movie focuses on the Crow, a character portrayed by Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), who, together with his bride-to-be Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas), is viciously killed by a ruthless street gang on the night of their wedding. After his demise, Eric’s spirit is led to the afterlife by a crow, but he yearns for revenge against those responsible for their deaths. With the assistance of this crow, he finds a way to be reborn as an extraordinary being and sets out on a mission to track down and punish the killers who stole his and Shelly’s lives.

2. The Crow II: City of Angels (1996)

In this gripping sequel, I find myself once again enthralled by the tale of Ashe Corven, portrayed by Vincent Perez. Alongside his eight-year-old son, Danny, played by Eric Acosta, Ashe meets an unspeakable fate at the hands of a ruthless drug cartel. Yet, much like the enigmatic Eric from the original film, the resilient spirit of Ashe is miraculously revived by a mystical crow. With vengeance burning in his heart, Ashe embarks on a relentless quest to bring those responsible for their deaths to justice.

3. The Crow: Salvation (2000)

The third installment of the series focuses on Alex Corvis (Eric Mabius), a man falsely accused and sentenced to death for the brutal murder of his girlfriend Lauren (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe). After an agonizing execution in an electric chair, Alex is miraculously resurrected by a crow, taking on supernatural powers. His new purpose: to track down and punish the individual who ended Lauren’s life.

4. The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005)

In the fourth installment of this series, we find protagonist Jimmy Cuervo, portrayed by Edward Furlong, resurrected following an unfortunate incident involving a satanic motorcycle gang. The gang, in a bid to unleash the Antichrist, murdered both Jimmy and his girlfriend, Lily (Emmanuelle Chriqui), as part of a ritualistic sacrifice.

5. The Crow (2024)

The latest installment of the series is a modern reimagining of the 1994 Crow film. Similar to its predecessor, it tells the story of Eric Draven (played by Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs), who are viciously killed by a gang. However, unlike the original, Eric is given an opportunity to resurrect Shelly in order to avenge their deaths by taking down Roeg, the criminal mastermind responsible. After coming back to life, he embarks on a mission to eliminate Roeg and rescue his beloved. Although they share similar plots, there are notable differences between the two films.
