What is Love Lies Bleeding about?

In an engaging rephrasing: The movie Love Lies Bleeding introduces Kristen Stewart as the quiet and reserved gym manager Lou Langston, while Katy O’Brian portrays the fiery bodybuilder Jackie Cleaver. A chance encounter at the gym, which is under Lou’s father’s ownership, ignites a romantic connection between them.

In the 1980s setting, this film tells the story of a new couple and their lives together. However, financial struggles confront Jackie, who is broke and in need of money for an upcoming bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas. She diligently trains at the gym in preparation. Yet, her world takes an unexpected turn when Lou, with a criminal family background, enters her life and introduces her to steroids.

Jackie’s behavior is becoming more and more hostile each day, leading to unwanted repercussions for Lou. Tragically, their relationship reaches a critical point when Jackie takes the life of Lou’s sister’s husband, JJ, skillfully portrayed by Dave Franco.

The occurrence triggers a series of consequences: The FBI investigates, while Lou’s father and crime boss, Ed Harris (Lou Sr.), seek out Lou in Las Vegas after she has allegedly committed a murder. However, due to an overdose of steroids, Lou becomes delusional and gets arrested. Eventually, Lou’s father hires her to eliminate his own daughter who threatens to reveal his hidden criminal scheme.

After resolving their differences and reuniting with her lover, Lou, Jackie fled following the death of her father, who intended to harm them both.

A neo-noir crime thriller, helmed by Rose Glass and penned by Weronika Tofilska, made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024.
