In Monster Hunter Wilds, Focus Mode is a significant feature that enables you to concentrate your attacks and execute Focus Strikes to severely damage monsters. Although it can be quickly activated with a single key press on both PC and consoles, the overall functionality may not be self-explanatory. This is characteristic of Monster Hunter Wilds, but it doesn’t diminish its importance for you to grasp its workings properly. Here is an explanation of Focus Mode in Monster Hunter Wilds along with instructions for using it on mouse and keyboard as well as a controller.
In this rephrased version, the text maintains the original meaning while making it easier to read and understand.
Monster Hunter Wilds Focus Mode explained
Using the Focus Mode in Monster Hunter Worlds is crucial because it assists with targeting your attacks and enables you to unleash ferocious Focus Strikes that cause extensive damage to beasts. To trigger Focus Mode, simply press L2/LT on a controller or ALT when wielding a melee weapon.
As a dedicated user, I can switch between Focus Mode on and off using any of these techniques. However, I can customize it so that the mode activates only when I hold down the button instead.
- Controller: Open start menu > System tab > Options menu > Controls tab > Aim/Focus Mode Controls on page 2/3 > set to L2/LT to Activate Mode.
- Mouse and keyboard: The hold to activate button is automatically bound to one of the mouse side buttons, though you might not have these on your mouse and so will need to rebind under the Keyboard Configuration menu on the System tab.
Engaging Focus Mode positions a targeting reticle at the center of your screen, which your Hunter will automatically lock onto. This results in your Hunter moving and directing all attacks with their Monster Hunter Wilds weapons towards the reticle. You’ll need to move the right stick or mouse to adjust the reticle’s position, ensuring it is always aimed at the monster you are fighting during a melee combo. It’s important to note that Focus Mode is different from locking onto a monster, which can be done by pressing the right stick inward on a controller.
Focus Mode offers you the opportunity to carry out Focus Attacks by pressing R1/RB or Shift when in this mode. Executing a Focus Attack on a monster’s vulnerable spot (marked by glowing red areas) results in a powerful assault that obliterates that spot and possibly others, depending on the weapon employed, inflicting significant damage on the target monster and leaving it disoriented. Furthermore, you can counter certain enemy attacks with a short, red-glowing warning by timing your response correctly. If successful, this move delivers immense damage and thwarts the enemy’s attack, shielding you from potential heavy damage as well!
