HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Live-Action Sequel Movie Already Sets Release Date

Patience, dear fans! Or perhaps excitement would be more fitting? The sequel to a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is indeed in the works, with a confirmed release date, yet surprisingly, the initial live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has yet to hit the big screen. We’ve barely had the pleasure of witnessing Toothless and Hiccup together in live-action form for less than a few minutes. However, Universal Pictures seems to have placed high bets on dragons (given their popularity), as the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 film is slated for release in summer 2027.

At Cinema Con, Universal Pictures confirmed that a live-action sequel to “How to Train Your Dragon” is in production. The initial live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” film will hit theaters this summer on June 13, 2025. Not long after, Universal revealed that the second live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” movie will premiere in theaters on June 11, 2027. It seems that Toothless has been well-received by audiences, as he appears very similar to his original design.

Dean DeBlois is coming back for the sequel of “How to Train Your Dragon,” joined by cast members Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. It’s anticipated that Gerard Butler will reappear as Stoick the Vast as well. Butler voiced Stoick in the animated film, but he will portray the character in live-action for the first time in the upcoming movie.

Initially, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” was a computer-animated film that hit screens in 2014. The star-studded cast featured Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, and America Ferrera lending their voices. In the storyline, Hiccup and Toothless uncovered a sinister plan to assemble an army using dragons. As of now, we can only speculate about the plot of the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon 2” movie until the first live-action film is released.

Director DeBlois spoke about the live-action adaptation of the world in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. “Given the tight production timeline and the scarce resources during our initial DreamWorks project, there were aspects we didn’t fully develop as much as we could have. This includes certain characters, the richness of relationships, and the thrilling action sequences. This reboot aims to stay true to the story while finding opportunities to deepen character relationships, add layers, and even introduce some mythology that may have been absent in the original.

A live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” promises to expand our horizons, offering us ample opportunity to immerse ourselves further in the captivating universe that we hold dear.
