How To Dress As Other Characters In Where Winds Meet

Where Winds Meet offers a huge number of gameplay systems. Some are essential for creating a character build that suits how you like to play. Others are only used once during specific battles and then aren’t seen again. Many systems fall somewhere between these two extremes – useful in a few places, but not core to the overall experience.

Disguises are a gameplay feature that allow you to completely change your character’s appearance – not just cosmetically, but functionally – for a limited time. It’s a surprisingly complex system with a lot going on beneath the surface.

What Are Disguises?

These aren’t just simple disguises; they’re more like complete character skins, fully transforming how your character looks. Beyond the visual change, these transformations also unlock special abilities and gameplay options related to the new form.

Every disguise has a specific use. It might let you speak to characters who would normally ignore you, or even help you slip past guards at a secure location. Disguises aren’t just about changing your appearance; they have a practical purpose, and can sometimes make it easier to get items from people in the game.

When you’re wearing a disguise, many of your abilities are limited – you won’t be able to jump or use skills that rely on agility as you normally would.

Disguises don’t last forever and require Commerce Coins to use – these coins are rare, so only use a disguise if you have enough and can actually accomplish what you set out to do while wearing it.

How To Unlock New Disguises

You won’t just find disguises – you have to make them yourself! First, you’ll need to sketch the character you want to disguise. You can do this for any character using Rattan Paper in your inventory. Some characters with special disguises will even prompt you to sketch them directly.

If the character you’re disguised as sees you, they will call the guards and have you arrested.

Sketching is easy! Simply move your cursor over an item to see its name and how hard it is to create as a disguise. To make the sketch, just press a button, then take it to the disguise shop you prefer.

To make portraits needed for disguises, you’ll need Rattan Paper. You can buy it from any craftsman who works with wood, and there’s one conveniently located south of the disguise shop in Kaifeng City.

Once you finish the Veil of Love quest and can start using disguises, you’ll see a mask icon on the world map indicating where you can create new ones.

Makeup Levels

When creating disguises for people, you’ll see each one has a difficulty level. This level reflects how hard it is to actually make the disguise at the shop, and it’s based on your character’s makeup skill.

Each time you order a new disguise, you earn progress towards improving your Makeup skill. As your Makeup skill increases, you’ll be able to use disguises that are that level of difficulty or easier. For example, at Makeup level 3, you can equip disguises with a difficulty of 3 or lower.

Disguises can be tricky to find, so the easiest way to unlock new ones and improve your Makeup skill is by accepting jobs from the disguise shop. These jobs involve obtaining disguises and completing tasks while wearing them. You’ll experience interesting stories and level up your Makeup skill at the same time – it’s a great deal!

Where To Equip Disguises

Currently, there are just two places in the game where you can buy disguises, and both are located in Kaifeng. One is right in Kaifeng City, southeast of the city and to the right of the Fair Grounds.

You can also find the second location under Kaifeng City, in the Ghostlight Market. Reaching it involves completing an entire Lost Chapter, and it’s only open at certain times, but it’s another possibility. Good news – your makeup progress carries over between both locations, so you can choose whichever one is easiest to get to.
