How To Defeat Tricephalos To Unlock Scholar And Undertaker In Elden Ring: The Forsaken Hollows

If you’ve bought both Elden Ring: Nightreign and the expansion, The Forsaken Hollows, you might be looking for the new characters, Scholar and Undertaker, and the rest of the added content. To access everything, you first need to finish the Tricephalos expedition.

The Gladius Beast of Night is a massive, three-headed wolf with a chained sword strapped to its back. As the only Nightlord boss in the game, it’s considered one of the easier fights, though you might still need a few attempts to win. This guide will teach you everything you need to know to defeat the Gladius Beast of Night in Elden Ring: Nightreign.

How To Defeat Gladius Beast Of Night (Tricephalos)

When the battle begins, you’ll face the boss in its initial form: a three-headed wolf. But as you attack, it will occasionally divide into three separate enemies. Let’s first concentrate on defeating the original wolf form.

You can attempt this boss fight at level 10, but a higher level will make it easier. Remember, it’s especially vulnerable to Holy damage, so prioritize equipping weapons or learning spells that deal Holy damage before you go.

Gladius can quickly jump and bite with its three mouths. To avoid its attacks, roll backwards, and the rest of the team should concentrate their attacks on the boss from behind.

So, this boss, Gladius, can actually bite you with one or even multiple heads back-to-back! The cool thing is, you can usually tell which head is going to attack first because it’ll kinda ‘charge up’ beforehand. It gives you a little warning to react!

When riding Gladius, be careful! It can turn suddenly and strike with its head. You’ll have a brief warning – one of its heads will turn to the side before it whips around to attack.

Gladius uses its sword for long-distance attacks. It can grab the chains attached to the sword on its back and then strike forward in a straight line.

The boss has a simple attack that’s easy to avoid – just roll to the side. However, it also has a more difficult version where it stands up on its hind legs, grabs its sword, and spins around for a full 360-degree attack. The key is to wait for a brief pause before the spin and then roll right before the sword reaches you.

Also, keep in mind that he can spin twice in a row, attacking both times.

Although the initial Gladius attack is simple to dodge, be aware that it will follow up with a series of sword attacks. To anticipate this, always watch the chain – it will give you a warning before the follow-up strikes.

In addition to its sword attacks, Gladius can breathe fire. This is its second long-range attack, and it reaches surprisingly far, so don’t assume you’re safe just because you’re distant! Watch for Gladius to charge up its fiery breath, then quickly dodge to either side when it attacks.

Okay, so for this part of the fight, here’s what we’re doing: one of us needs to be the ‘tank’ and grab Gladius’s attention, basically keeping him focused on them. While that person is doing that, the other two of us need to hit him in the back as much as possible, but always be ready for him to spin around. It’s way easier if at least one of us can attack from a distance, that way we can avoid getting hit by his quick turns and those annoying chain attacks.

Things will get more challenging when Gladius divides into three separate enemies. Don’t worry, this split is only temporary, and they won’t gain any new attacks. However, if you usually fight from a distance, you might struggle to adapt. Also, two of the Gladius can target the same player, making things especially difficult.

There are a few ways to handle this, but I suggest having each player focus on one enemy so everyone knows what’s happening. Another option is to pair a newer player with someone more experienced, letting them both concentrate on a single enemy – that way, the experienced player can help if the newer one struggles.

Only one of the three creatures has a sword, so it’s best to concentrate on the other two, who have fewer attacks. Remember to watch behind you to avoid getting caught off guard. I suggest you don’t lock onto enemies during these fights – it will give you better control of the camera and a wider view of what’s happening.

Rewards For Defeating Gladius Beast Of Night (Tricephalos)

Once you beat the Gladius Beast of Night, you’ll gain access to six additional expeditions from the main game, plus one of the expeditions from the DLC (The Balancers). You’ll also unlock the Night of the Beast relic, an Old Pocketwatch (used to unlock new characters), the two playable characters from The Forsaken Hollows (find them in the central hub area), and a few random relics.
