In Where Winds Meet, you’ll encounter many bosses with multiple phases, and these fights can be quite difficult depending on how challenging you set the game. One of these battles is against Murong Yuan and her Wooden Eagle, which you’ll find in the Jadewood Court area of Kaifeng.
To battle her, begin the Lost Chapter quest “Jinming Pool: Petalfall Banquet.” Completing this short questline will unlock the fight. While the battle can be challenging depending on the difficulty level, it’s generally a simple encounter. Here’s a guide to help you win.
Overview

The battle with Yuan happens in two stages: first, you’ll fight her alone, and then alongside a large Wooden Eagle. You can start this questline once you’ve finished all the main quests in Kaifeng.
Like other major bosses, you can team up with another player using co-op, or summon an NPC companion to assist you in the battle. Both options can make the fight much easier.
Phse One
The first phase of the fight is a one-on-one duel with Yuan. Her speed and reach are the main things to watch out for – she moves around the arena quickly and can attack you from a good distance, even though she fights up close. However, while she’s fast at moving, her actual attacks aren’t as quick, so you can keep her on the defensive by constantly attacking before she has a chance to strike.
Occasionally, her sword will glow yellow when she attacks. This usually means she’s preparing a powerful attack that you’ll need to dodge.
While you can sometimes block attacks with yellow blades, it’s generally safer to prepare to dodge as soon as you see one, especially if you don’t have fast reflexes.
You can also use Meridian Touch to prevent these attacks, but you’ll need precise timing – the window to use it is very small. It’s a risky move, but successful timing can be very rewarding.
Phase Two
The Wooden Eagle enters the battle in the second phase. It primarily attacks from a distance, but will occasionally move in close for melee attacks, requiring you to block or dodge.
Okay, so I’ve learned something important about this fight! Honestly, trying to destroy the Wooden Eagle is a total time-waster. You don’t actually need to take it down. All you have to do is beat Yuan, the real boss. The Eagle does have a health bar, but it’s way more effective to just focus all your attacks on Yuan instead.
Okay, so when that Eagle locks onto me, the camera automatically switches focus, which is super helpful! Basically, when it’s targeting me instead of Yuan, I just need to concentrate on defending – blocking, dodging, parrying, you know the drill – and let the Eagle lose interest on its own. It’s important to remember that every attack it’s making at me is one that should have hit Yuan, so I just need to hold out until it gives up and goes back to bothering Yuan, then I can get back to the fight!
Yuan’s attacks in this phase are largely the same as before, though she now has a few new moves where the Eagle assists her. You can block these new attacks, and doing so will leave her very open to counterattacks, but the timing is difficult. If you use the same strategies that worked in the first phase, she shouldn’t be too challenging.
