How to capture a Tracktail Lizard in Monster Hunter Wilds (Dareel’s Research Report guide)

During your Monster Hunter Wilds adventure, various characters may have tasks for you amidst your pursuit of giant beasts. Immediately following your victory over the Doshaguma Alpha, Dareel asks you to locate a smaller creature – specifically, a Tracktail Lizard.

The Tracktail Lizard is a native creature found in various expansive environments as you explore. Although they’re not as dangerous as the usual aggressive creatures you encounter when completing guild quests, these lizards play a crucial role that can benefit you. Dareel wants to emphasize their significance by teaching you how to locate and capture one for him.

Here’s what you need to know about how to capture a Tracktail Lizard in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to complete Dareel’s Research Report in Monster Hunter Wilds – Tracktail Lizard location

Dareel assigns you a quest to locate a Tracktail Lizard. Initially, he doesn’t offer any clear guidance on finding this creature. However, if you talk to him again before you set out, he will provide a more specific tip. He hints that the Windward Plains’ Tracktail Lizards are often found near oases. So, in your search for these elusive creatures, look for small water sources in the desert as this is likely where you’ll find them.

As a fan of the game, I’d suggest venturing towards Region 13 in the plains, which lies near where you encountered the fearsome Balahara, the Leviathan of the wastes. The journey is on you, but since it’s a side quest, it can be tackled whenever you’re not engaged in other battles or progressing with the main storyline. I’d encourage you to momentarily pause your current endeavors to hunt down this elusive creature.

How to catch a Tracktail Lizard in MH Wilds

As you journey towards the oases, it’s advisable to prepare your capture net ahead of time. This is an item you already have in your inventory, much like switching ammunition on your Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s always available in your inventory, so there’s no need to make space for it, but having it ready to use would be beneficial.

It’s more straightforward to spot Tracktail Lizards on the sand than it is to capture them because of their swift and agile nature. From a distance, they may seem ordinary, but as you approach, they quickly sense your presence and burrow themselves into the ground. Essentially, observing them is far simpler than attempting to catch them.

A good strategy for capturing them is to ensure your net is at hand, dismount slightly, and stealthily approach by assuming a crouching position. As you draw near, they may lift their heads to survey the surroundings, providing an opportunity to aim with your slinger and try to catch one before it dives back into the sand.

As a fan, I must admit that there’s a possibility you might not find them right away on your initial try. It can be quite disheartening, but remember, it’s not the end of the game. You have two options:

1. You can quickly teleport back to the base camp and then make your way back to the oasis to search for them again.
2. Alternatively, you could explore the surrounding area or hunt a monster to earn Tracktail Lizard confidence points, which will eventually lead you out of the sandy expanse.

Keep in mind that this part of the game takes some time, so don’t expect an immediate resolution.

Once you’ve bagged one, make your way back to Dareel at the Plains camp to demonstrate that your assignment is done. Be prepared for a few more minor hunts where you’ll need to approach smaller creatures stealthily and bring them back to camp in Monster Hunter Wilds.
