How PREDATOR: BADLANDS May Connect to ALIEN: EARTH

A really interesting aspect of Predator: Badlands is its strong connection to the Alien universe. While the Alien vs. Predator movies attempted this before, they aren’t officially part of the Alien or Predator storylines. Predator: Badlands is canon, though, and features Elle Fanning as Thia, a synthetic created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation. She’s stranded on the dangerous planet Genna with Dek, the young Predator who’s also a main character. This raises a question: could this film secretly tie into Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth? We believe one of the alien species featured in the recent FX series might actually have originated on Genna.

As a big fan of the Alien universe, I always found Alien: Earth fascinating. It details the journey of the Weyland-Yutani ship, the Maginot, which spent 65 years traveling the galaxy to collect alien creatures – all for that famously shady company. Naturally, they were after the Xenomorph, but the film also introduced some really interesting lesser-known species, like the T. Ocellus – often called the ‘Sheep with the Eye’ – and a bunch of creepy, insect-like bloodsuckers.

There was also a plant-like creature resembling a massive Venus flytrap, nicknamed “the Orchid.” After escaping containment, it killed several people. But was this strange plant somehow connected to Genna from the Badlands?

Dek’s arrival on Genna, a planet feared throughout the galaxy by his people, immediately puts him in danger. He narrowly escapes a group of tree-dwelling, meat-eating plants. While not exactly like the creatures from Alien: Earth, their behavior is strikingly similar. Considering Weyland-Yutani dispatched synthetic beings to gather the planet’s lifeforms for weapons development, could Genna be the same world featured in Alien: Earth?

The story of Alien: Earth happens two years before the original Alien film. Director Dan Trachtenberg has stated that Predator: Badlands takes place around 300 years in the future. This means it’s roughly 200 years after the events of Alien: Earth, and about 100 years before Alien: Resurrection, which reveals the surprising fact that Weyland-Yutani was bought by Walmart. However, this doesn’t rule out the possibility that Weyland-Yutani tried to exploit the planet Genna at an earlier time.

As a huge fan of the Alien universe, one thing that’s always bothered me is the lack of information about where all those creatures actually came from. We never really learned which planets the Alien: Earth team visited to collect them, or even if they were all supposed to be from the same place! It makes you wonder – did the crew of the Maginot ever make it to Genna, and were those plant-like specimens collected there? Badlands tells us only synths can handle the dangers of Genna, but that doesn’t necessarily mean humans never attempted a landing. It’s interesting to think that maybe Mr. Morrow, being a cyborg, was the only crew member they actually sent down to the surface.

It’s unclear where the creatures featured in Alien: Earth originally came from, though a potential second season might provide some answers. It’s possible some of them originated on the planet Genna, which would create a deeper connection between the Alien and Predator stories.
