Fan emotions ran high when Val Kilmer reprised his role as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick. It had been 36 years since the release of the first Top Gun, leaving viewers curious about Kilmer’s involvement alongside Tom Cruise in this sequel.
In reality, Kilmer was fighting a tough battle against throat cancer, which made it hard for him to talk. Nevertheless, the creators of the film cleverly incorporated his condition into the plot, enabling him to converse via typing initially, and finally speaking a single significant line at the end.
In the movie Top Gun: Maverick, Kilmer’s voice was digitally recreated using advanced artificial intelligence technology. After being affected by cancer, Kilmer lost his natural speaking ability. To bring his iconic voice back to life in the film, he collaborated with Sonantic, a company specializing in AI-powered voice synthesis. (Daily Mail)
Instead of using Val Kilmer’s previous acting scenes and talks from archival footage, they constructed a model for his voice. Out of forty distinct vocal alternatives, the one that conveyed the most emotion was chosen. Thanks to this technology, Kilmer could once more speak with his own voice on-screen.
One powerful moment in the movie came when Kilmer’s character, Iceman, and Cruise’s character, Maverick, shared a poignant exchange. Struggling with his place in the Navy, Iceman typed, “It’s now time for you to move on.
Later, he shares, “The Navy requires Maverick. The kid benefits from Maverick. That’s why I advocated for you. That’s why you’re still around.” Their conversation concludes playfully when Iceman inquires, “Just one more thing, who’s the superior pilot, you or me?” To which Maverick replies, “Let’s keep this moment pleasant. Let’s not spoil it.
Back in August 2021, Kilmer shared his journey of employing AI technology to reclaim his speaking ability. In a released statement, he expressed his gratitude towards the whole Sonantic team for expertly reviving his voice in a manner he had never thought achievable before.
He expressed that the capacity to convey thoughts and feelings is fundamental to human life, but complications from throat cancer had hampered others’ comprehension of him. He further mentioned that having the opportunity to tell his tale using a voice that resonates as genuine and relatable was an exceptionally precious gift.
