As a seasoned aficionado of all things cinematic, I must say that the International Classic Film Market (MIFC) in Lyon, France is nothing short of a treasure trove for film enthusiasts like myself. The opportunity to witness the restoration process of iconic films, such as Steven Spielberg’s The Sugarland Express, under the guidance of experts like Cassandra Moore, VP of Mastering and Archive at NBC Universal, is simply exhilarating.
The 12th installment of the International Classic Film Market (MIFC) kicked off in Lyon, France. Cassandra Moore, Vice President of Mastering and Archive at NBC Universal, shared insights about her company’s goal to preserve classic films. This film market, along with the Lumière Film Festival, is a magnificent occasion that honors the rich legacy of cinema.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say, this year’s festival was a dream come true! With an astounding lineup of 150 films, it was a veritable feast for film lovers like myself. One gem that truly stood out was none other than the legendary Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, The Sugarland Express. And here’s the icing on the cake – this year at Cannes Classics, we got to witness the breathtakingly restored version of this cult classic!
Following the retrieval of the original recordings from the safe, our skilled team meticulously examined and enhanced the audio and visual quality. They then compiled a report detailing their findings. As for the process, our artist (an exceptional group) manually cleans away dust and scratches, she mentioned. She added that these aspects are both engaging and enjoyable because they allow the artist to creatively solve the problem at hand.
Even when a frame appears damaged due to wear and tear, as Morre suggests, it can always be restored. Once the repairs are made, the next phase involves adding color and sound, which were overseen by Spielberg personally. According to Moore, upon seeing the restoration, Spielberg himself remarked, “It’s never looked better.” This was a truly gratifying comment, shared Moore.
She further admitted that at the Cannes premiere, the film looked and sounded great, credit to the collaborative efforts of her team. Moore also explained that restoring the 1974 crime adventure was an inevitable choice because it was approaching its 50th anniversary.
She prefers to watch movies that may not be box office hits, but they carry great significance in cinematic history.
