heads up: the following post contains spoilers for episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2. If you’re still reeling from the emotional turmoil of episode 2 and haven’t had time to catch your breath, consider saving this article for a later moment when you feel ready to delve deeper into the storyline.
Season 2 of “The Last of Us” kicked off with a bang. Initially establishing the scene in Jackson, events took a dramatic turn in episode 2 when the fortified post-apocalyptic community in western Wyoming was suddenly attacked by a swarm of infected. Simultaneously, the narrative delved deep into Joel’s harrowing last moments as he confronted the vengeful Abby and her loyal but reluctant group.
In the next installment of “The Last of Us”, three months have passed and Ellie and Dina find themselves in Seattle. But hold on a minute! You might be wondering, given it’s the apocalypse with no planes, trains, or cars (or at least few), how did two seasoned combatants from Wyoming make their way to Seattle on horseback so quickly? Just out of curiosity, what distance are we talking about here in “The Last of Us”?
Just How Far Are The Last of Us‘ Jackson, Wyoming, and Seattle, Washington Locations?
To begin with, let’s first establish where we are going. Seattle is straightforward; it’s a well-known city that mirrors its depiction in both the game and the series. However, Jackson, Wyoming, requires a bit more clarification. Contrary to what might be assumed, Jackson, Wyoming, does exist, but it’s not part of Jackson County. Instead, it’s a popular tourist destination situated in Teton County, on the westernmost edge of the state. You can find an intriguing comparison between the actual landscape and the game here, courtesy of a local resident.
Searching the two locations from “The Last of Us” on Google Maps reveals a distance of approximately 860 miles between Jackson and Seattle. However, this figure takes into account an initial detour south towards Twin Falls and north through Boise. Although this shortcut saves time when traveling by car at 80 miles per hour on rural highways in Idaho, it’s unnecessary for travel by foot or horseback. In fact, the actual distance increases slightly if one were to walk, as the detour adds approximately 10 more miles, resulting in a total of 870 miles.
1. A check using Apple Maps and Waze Maps both suggest a similar time frame. Ellie and Dina exit at approximately the 40-minute point in the episode, and they arrive at their destination, the Emerald City, by minute 52. This indicates that they travel almost a thousand miles within just 12 minutes of screen time on season two of The Last of Us.
Episode 3 Slows The Last of Us Season 2’s Story Down A Lot
By the time the third episode of “The Last of Us” season two was released, everyone, including their mothers, were eagerly anticipating how Jackson and Ellie would deal with the personal and collective trauma they had encountered. However, despite lingering tension, events progressed at a snail’s pace. Indeed, by the end of the third episode, Ellie and Dina had covered half of America, but for most of the third installment of Season 2, the action was almost at a standstill.
The story commences with characters dealing with the traumas and mourning their departed comrades. However, right when it seems like events will continue at a rapid pace, the title sequence appears, and the narrative resumes three months down the line. Jackson is in the thick of reconstruction, while the survivors are managing to find normalcy again.
Additionally, Ellie seems to be feigning her healing process and subsequently manipulating political maneuvers in an attempt to dispatch a team against Abby and her group. The situation doesn’t escalate significantly until Ellie’s call for retaliation is rejected, at which point the pace of events picks up dramatically. This constant shift between fast and slow-moving sequences lends the episode a peculiar Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde atmosphere. It’s as if things accelerate quickly, then slow down like molasses in winter, only to speed up again instantaneously.
It’s likely that things will settle down since Ellie and Dina have moved to Seattle for good. Given the intense emotional tension and erratic pacing throughout the season so far, everyone is already feeling tense. Still, there are several episodes left until the finale, which means we’ve got a long road ahead.
