During an interview with Variety for their Sundance cover, Benedict Cumberbatch humorously shared his surprising reaction to Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. The Sherlock Holmes actor admitted that he was left speechless and sent a few choice words in a text message to Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios.
He said to the news source, “I sent a message saying, ‘What in the world is going on?’ and quickly followed up with, ‘Wow, what in the world is going on! I mean, wow, what in the world is going on,'”
Later at Comic-Con last year, the stunning revelation was made, which was met with a thunderous applause and cheers. As Downey entered the hall wearing a mask, the crowd erupted again when he removed it.
In various movies such as Avengers: Endgame, Benedict Cumberbatch has acted alongside the legendary Oscar-winning Marvel character, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). However, it seems rather improbable that Doctor Strange (Cumberbatch) will encounter Downey’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in the future.
2026’s Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Downey and the Russo brothers, longtime directors of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role in The Imitation Game, has confirmed that he won’t be featured in this film. In a casual moment, he jokingly remarked, “Is that a spoiler? Oh well!
In the upcoming Marvel movie, Cumberbatch disclosed that the role of his character underwent a substantial transformation following the studio’s decision to cut Jonathan Majors out of the project, as a result of his conviction for domestic violence against his former partner.
In the forthcoming stages of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Major’s adversary Kang was initially slated to serve as the primary antagonist. However, his departure from the franchise necessitated a reworking of the narrative, impacting the potential part Doctor Strange could have taken in the films.
As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! When I heard Downey’s character becoming the main adversary, I couldn’t contain my curiosity. And here’s what Benedict Cumberbatch had to say: his character stepping aside during Doomsday is because the storyline doesn’t resonate with where his character stands at this point.
But wait! There’s more! He also hinted that Doctor Strange will play a significant role in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, stating that my man would be “right smack dab in the middle of things,” suggesting a pivotal part for our sorcerer supreme. I can hardly wait to see what unfolds!
Fans will need to be patient as they won’t get to see Downey and Cumberbatch together on screen anytime soon. In his earlier Doctor Strange films, Cumberbatch confessed he felt a bit out of place, but observing Downey’s chemistry with Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming helped him find his footing within the Marvel universe.
