As a long-time Marvel fan with memories of flipping through comic books at my local convenience store during high school lunch breaks, I must say that the Deadpool and Wolverine movie has been a breath of fresh air for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sixth-biggest opening weekend in box office history is no small feat!
The team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine seems to have given the Marvel Cinematic Universe a significant boost, as their films have been pushing boundaries in recent years. The collaboration between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman has garnered impressive box office numbers, making it the sixth-largest opening weekend in history. According to reports, the movie grossed $211 million domestically and an additional $443 million internationally.
Regardless of whether you’ve seen it or not, it’s common knowledge that Ryan Reynolds’ film is filled with unexpected guest stars from the MCU, as well as various jokes and references to engage viewers. Much like Spiderman: No Way Home, this movie has hidden treasures (Easter eggs) for its audience too. One of the most noteworthy surprises would likely be the appearance of Matthew McConaughey.
Among all the brief appearances, Matthew makes a quick, almost unnoticed entrance, marking his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the cameos were entertaining, the diverse Deadpool and Wolverine characters were particularly thrilling to observe. A group of distinct Deadpool personas, including female, child, and canine versions, have all made their on-screen debuts.
One character from the list is either Cowboypool or Deadpool Junior; this Western adaptation features Matthew McConaughey as the voice actor for the character. Despite the suit concealing the actor’s face, McConaughey’s distinctive voice remains recognizable, even when he attempts to modify his accent to mimic an Old West drawl.
In this particular version, Deadpool’s signature outfit and appearance are replaced by that of the Deadpool Kid or Cowboypool. He wields pearl-handled six-shooters and dons a cured leather outfit, complete with a ten-gallon hat. The Deadpool Kid made his debut in issue #7 of 2010’s Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth. The original Deadpool encounters a Cowboy counterpart of himself in another dimension after traveling through the multiverse to reach a Western realm.
Although Deadpool had previously killed this character, he reappeared in Deadpool Kills Deadpool issue #2 from 2012. In the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, however, his role was minimal and primarily served as a fan service. Yet, we can’t help but hope for a future film featuring McConaughey, marking his highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. We’re eager to see more of him in the MCU.
Enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to watch the Interstellar star cast in a Marvel Cinematic Universe part. There were whispers that the actor declined the role of Ego in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and was also supposedly given the chance to play Dr. Stephen Strange prior to Benedict Cumberbatch assuming it.
