In a fascinating parallel between art and reality, it appears that Catholic cardinals involved in the 2025 conclave are drawing inspiration from the 2024 movie “Conclave”, directed by Edward Berger. This film is providing them with insight into the procedures and politics involved in selecting the next pope.
As an ardent admirer, I’ve been secretly drawn to peeking at the Conclave like a captivating movie before and during the recent papal elections in Rome. A fellow cleric confided that some of us have even caught glimpses of it on the big screen. Surprisingly, it seems incredibly authentic, especially for those like me who are relatively new to Vatican proceedings.
The story, similar to Robert Harris’ novel, traces Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), who assumes leadership of the College of Cardinals after the pope passes away. Over a span of three days within the Vatican walls, this suspenseful tale uncovers hidden truths and controversies as Lawrence probes into the backgrounds of his fellow contenders for the papal seat.
This year marks the initial conclave held since Pope Francis was elected in 2017. Regrettably, Pope Francis, who became the first pope from Latin America, passed away on April 21 following a stroke. Despite cardinals initiating voting sessions this week, they were unable to elect a new pope during the initial day of balloting.
In the year 2025, the movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards, with categories such as Best Picture, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress. The screenwriter, Peter Straughan, was victorious in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.
In a different rendition: The Conclave isn’t the first time Hollywood has portrayed papal politics; the 2019 film “The Two Popes,” which stars Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis, delved into similar topics and garnered three Oscar nominations. As per The Hollywood Reporter, this production distinguishes itself by tackling contemporary Church issues such as power struggles, institutional prejudice, and even a subplot centered around the character of Isabella Rossellini’s nun character who questions the male-dominated hierarchy within the Church.
