As an ardent fan of Angelina Jolie, I have always admired her versatility as an actress and her courage to take on challenging roles that require personal growth. The transformation she underwent for her role in Maria is nothing short of inspiring.
Angelina Jolie underwent the process of revisiting and recovering from past emotional struggles to develop the singing voice suitable for her character Maria in the movie. In an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, airing on Thursday, November 21, the esteemed actress, aged 49, opened up about her journey into portraying Maria Callas, the renowned late American opera singer admired for her exceptional vocal prowess.
In simpler terms, Good Morning America (GMA) posted a part of their conversation with People magazine, where Michael Strahan, aged 52, inquired about Angelina Jolie’s explanation of opera lessons being therapeutic and more.
Jolie said, “You might not notice it, but various experiences we encounter throughout life get stored within us – I’m sure you’ve had plenty of such moments yourself. These memories are kept hidden away to help us keep moving forward. To truly express ourselves fully through song, though, we need to unlock those hidden memories.
And unlock Jolie did, as she revealed she took a deep breath and let her bitter past experiences flow out of her body in the form of tears. That’s pretty much what her first opera lesson for her role in and as Maria consisted of.
In the movie mentioned earlier, directed by Pablo Larrain, viewers can expect to hear Jolie’s voice harmoniously combined with actual recordings of Callas’s singing. Earlier, Jolie had revealed that she dedicated about seven months to vocally preparing for this specific role.
Last month, Jolie shared with Variety that singing has been more beneficial for her emotionally than therapy. She suggests that individuals seeking psychological assistance might find relief by experimenting with singing as a means to unearth and express their submerged traumatic feelings – an effect traditional therapy may not always accomplish alone.
Previously, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie disclosed that her self-assurance in singing had been shaken due to a former partner who wasn’t supportive of her vocal talents. In this discussion, Jolie pondered over why she allowed his opinions to influence her, despite having a solid background in theater.
Additionally, Jolie disclosed to THR that portraying a singer unveiled her as a soprano, an unexpected discovery given her prior belief that her voice was rougher and deeper, inclined towards grittier characters.
