How an Important WEDNESDAY Season 1 Character Returns in Season 2

Fans of the series “Wednesday” have speculated since Netflix announced a second season if a certain sinister figure would resurface. In fact, actress Christina Ricci does reappear in the show, starting from episode three titled “Call of the Woe.” However, unlike her previous role, she’s now a patient at Willow Hill psychiatric hospital. She briefly appears in episode three but plays a more significant part in episode four. Tragically, her character, Mrs. Thornhill, doesn’t survive beyond this point. Farewell, Mrs. Thornhill, we barely knew you.

In season one, Ricci was pivotal in her portrayal of Mrs. Marilyn Thornhill, who was the sole “Normie” teacher at Wednesday Addams’ school, Nevermore Academy – an institution for Outcasts. Previously known for playing young Wednesday in ’90s The Addams Family movies, Ricci’s casting sparked curiosity regarding her character’s true nature. Initially, Mrs. Thornhill appeared to be a kind-hearted botany teacher, even offering guidance to Wednesday as she navigated life at Nevermore.

In the heart of the series’ enigma, it was Mrs. Thornhill’s true persona that added depth to the intrigue. This involved Wednesday delving into a murder case connected to her parents, as it turned out that Gomez Addams was once falsely accused of killing a wealthy student named Garret Gates while they were both attending Nevermore Academy. The Gates family, notorious for their dislike of outsiders, met with untimely and mysterious deaths later on. Despite appearing as the nurturing den mother figure in the botany department, Mrs. Thornhill harbored sinister intentions.

It was discovered that Mrs. Thornhill wasn’t her true identity. In reality, she was Laurel Gates, who had orchestrated her own death in a staged drowning incident as a child. As the lone survivor of the influential and ostracizing local family, the Gates, Laurel disguised herself and infiltrated Nevermore Academy. Her goal was to take revenge on those who were outcasts, particularly Wednesday. Leveraging her botanical expertise, she concocted a chemical that would unleash Tyler Galpin’s “Hyde” persona, a hidden aggressive side which she intended to use as a tool for retribution against Nevermore Academy. She almost succeeded in this endeavor as well.

In the second season, it’s revealed that Laurel didn’t perish in the season one finale; instead, she was imprisoned at Northern State Correctional Prison by the police. Her reappearance in the series is marked by a significant haircut and increasingly erratic behavior. Despite her stays at Willow Hill where she assisted staff in deprogramming Tyler, she continues to exert an emotional grip over Tyler Galpin. His medical team is currently investigating how Laurel can manipulate his Hyde persona.

Though I persistently strive to connect with Tyler, his animosity towards me remains unwavering, and he attempts to end my life brutally. In the tumult that ensues when a zombie breaks free from its confines, I seize the opportunity to re-encounter him. I liberate him, yet in return for what he perceives as kindness from his “mother,” Tyler chooses to abandon me, piercing me with his deadly claws. In my final moments, I express my affection for him, “Mommy loves you.” And so ends the tale of Laurel/Marilyn. Yet in the realm of Wednesday, death seldom signifies a permanent goodbye; one can never truly predict the future.

Part one of Wednesday season two is currently streaming on Netflix.
