As a seasoned gamer with a knack for deciphering hidden meanings and connections within storylines, I must admit that the seventh episode of Agatha All Along left me utterly captivated. The Tarot Trial, with its pop culture witch theme, was a delightful twist that added depth to each character’s backstory.
In the seventh episode of “Agatha All Along”, I found myself eagerly anticipating a moment hinted at by all the teasers and trailers – my beloved Westview coven donning costumes reminiscent of iconic pop culture witches. This scene unfolded during the Tarot Trial segment of Lilia’s divination trial, crafted especially for Patti Lupone’s character. I couldn’t help but wonder, what was the purpose behind each witch being paired with these specific pop culture enchantresses? Each pairing seemed to hold a significant meaning, and I couldn’t wait to uncover the reasons behind them.
Agatha Harkness/The Wicked Witch of the West
In the trial scene, Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha, makes an entrance that mirrors the Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz.” She appears to find this amusing and tells Billy, “You know, she’s modeled after me.” This suggests that at some point, she might have encountered L. Frank Baum, leaving a lasting, unpleasant impression on him which inspired his villain in the novel. Agatha seems to enjoy embodying the stereotypical wicked witch persona, which is why her courtroom appearance reflects this. It’s also worth mentioning that Agatha was responsible for killing Sparky, the Maximoff family’s dog, in “WandaVision,” reminiscent of Margaret Hamilton’s famous line in “The Wizard of Oz” – “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!” Intriguingly, this series seems to be softening Agatha’s character, much like the play/novel “Wicked” did for the original wicked witch.
Billy Maximoff/Maleficent
In my gaming world, it turns out that the enchantress I adore, the one gracing my room posters since episode six, is none other than Maleficent from Disney’s timeless tale of Sleeping Beauty. Given my deep-rooted affection for classic Disney animation and the flair she exudes, it’s no surprise that I find myself drawn to her among the pantheon of pop culture witches. As a gay teen, Billy (Joe Locke), I resonate with Maleficent’s unique blend of power, mystery, and nonconformity.
Jennifer Kale/The Old Hag
Discussing Disney’s witches, it’s interesting to note that Jennifer Kale’s character bears a resemblance to the Evil Queen from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” as she represents the Old Hag persona of the queen. This connection is logical given the queen’s fixation on being the most beautiful in the land, similar to how Jennifer’s business revolves around peddling supposed anti-aging products to unaware consumers. Potions were also a specialty for the Evil Queen in the original film, which aligns with Jennifer’s expertise. In the Tarot Trial, it seems Jennifer didn’t appear as her glamorous Queen persona, perhaps because she acknowledges internally that she is much older than she appears. It’s likely that her deepest insecurity stems from the fear that beneath any facade of youthfulness, she remains an old hag at heart.
Lilia Calderu/Glinda the Good Witch
Among all individuals, Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone) shows the most disdain towards the portrayal of witches in popular culture. This was evident during her debut on the show. Consequently, it’s fitting that for her Tarot Trial, the theme revolved around pop culture witches. In this episode, Lilia assumed the role of Glinda, the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. Interestingly, this may be the witch archetype that least irritates her. Furthermore, given the circumstances of this episode, it’s not surprising that she embodied Glinda. In the original story of The Wizard of Oz, Glinda was the one who revealed to Dorothy that she possessed the solutions within herself all along. Analogously, Lilia had the solutions to her time leaps inside her all this time but didn’t know how to access them until the very end.
