If you’ve ever wondered how someone could turn a simple tax return into a modern art masterpiece, meet Bun Khath of Houston. For five years, this enterprising individual and his merry band of schemers convinced lenders to back big loans for companies that existed only in the realm of fantasy-or perhaps the margins of a spreadsheet. According to the DOJ, the total swindle hit a cool $40 million, which is either the largest bank fraud since the invention of the “For Sale” sign or a very expensive hobby.
The pièce de résistance? Khath and crew submitted loan applications so full of fake invoices, tax returns, and bank statements that one might assume the IRS had a new, more chaotic accounting method. They even went the extra mile by wiring the ill-gotten gains to shell companies, because why let a classic fraud scheme go un-upgraded?
Khath, who admitted guilt in 2023, now faces a decade behind bars-a sentence that’s either poetic justice or a very long Netflix marathon. While out on bond, he allegedly committed Medicare fraud, which the U.S. Attorney’s Office says is “not a recommended side hustle.” He was promptly hauled into custody after sentencing, presumably to prevent him from inventing another scheme in the interim.
Meanwhile, co-conspirator Hugo Villanueva, 71, became a fugitive until Peruvian authorities finally caught up to him. His extradition is pending, though one wonders if Peru’s legal system might prefer to keep him as a consultant for their own financial fraud initiatives.
The other two co-conspirators, William Mills and Jeremiah Almaguer, pleaded guilty last year. Mills, who operated from 2014 to 2023, must’ve been wondering when the IRS would finally tire of his paperwork. Almaguer, meanwhile, probably regrets ever trusting a spreadsheet named “FinalFinalFinal.xlsx.”
