As a lifetime fan of George R.R. Martin’s captivating world, I find myself eagerly anticipating the fate of the majestic Vermithor in House of the Dragon. Having read and re-read the Fire & Blood books numerous times, I am well aware that the beast’s days are numbered, but as a fan, I can’t help but hope for a different outcome.
In the world of Westeros during the Targaryen War of Succession, Vermithor is one of the most ancient mythical beasts. This creature was initially seen in House of the Dragon’s first season when Daemon Targaryen controlled it through a song by Haros Bartossi. Despite their initial unfriendly encounter, Vermithor eventually became more placid under Daemon’s gaze.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, Vermithor meets his demise during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, one of the most brutal conflicts known as the Dance of the Dragons. Yet, should the television adaptation adhere to the source material, there may be more story left for Vermithor in future seasons; however, it’s likely that he will perish by the series finale.
What is Vermithor’s future in House of the Dragon?
In the chronicles of Fire and Blood, I bear witness to the heart-wrenching prophecy that Vermithor, alongside three other mighty dragons, will perish in the fiery Second Battle of Tumbleton. At this pivotal moment, I, Hugh Hammer, shall be his steadfast rider. Initially, I shall ride for House Targaryen’s rightful heir, Rhaenyra, but as the battle unfolds and allegiances shift, I shall find myself torn between loyalties. Ultimately, I will choose to join forces with Team Green, making a fateful choice that will reshape the course of Westeros’ destiny.
In the year 130 After Conquest, the Second Battle of Tumbleton took place between supporters of green (greens) and black (blacks). Before the fight commenced, Hugh saw an opportunity following Aemond’s demise and sought to rule as king instead. This move put him at odds with both Seasmoke, ridden by Ser Addam Velaryen, and Tessarion, ridden by Prince Daeron of the greens, making Vermithor and Hugh their adversaries.
In the ensuing pandemonium, Addam’s knights attempted to slay Vermithor without success. Instead, their efforts only served to enrage Vermithor, who then indiscriminately wiped out everyone around him, including Lord Pipers and Deddings. On the verge of advancing further, Seasmoke launched an attack against Vermithor, but the effort proved futile as Seasmoke lacked the power that Vermithor possessed.
Meanwhile, Tessarion makes an appearance and engages all three in a lethal battle. In the end, Vermithor manages to kill Seasmoke but also sustains injuries to his wings. As he attempts to claim victory by beheading Seasmoke, Vermithor instead succumbs to his wounds and falls to his death.

What will happen in the series?
In the sequel to the Second Battle of Tumbleton, it was Silverwing who emerged victorious. Upon reaching Vermithor, she attempted to coax him into flight, but alas, he was already deceased. As time passed, Tumbleton was rebuilt and the battleground where both Vermithor and Seasmoke lay became a popular tourist destination.
Despite uncertainty about how HBO’s series adaptation might unfold, particularly concerning the Second Battle of Tumbleton, we are confident that Vermithor will feature prominently throughout the season.
The House of the Dragon season 2 finale episode is going to air this coming Sunday on HBO and Max.
