The upcoming third season of House of the Dragon suggests that Alicent and Rhaenyra’s attempts to end the Targaryen civil war will ultimately fail. With Aegon in hiding, Aemond Targaryen, now acting as king, will ensure that Rhaenyra’s coronation is not peaceful, preventing the opening of King’s Landing’s gates as his mother hoped. This will lead to widespread violence – on the streets, at sea, and in the air – and a full-scale war across Westeros. The season promises the large, significant battles that viewers anticipated in season two, and early looks suggest these scenes will be visually stunning, maintaining the show’s high production quality.
HBO is teasing the new season with the tagline, “The march toward fire and darkness begins!” Expect a lot of heartbreak along the way. The promotional material is filled with sad faces and a sense of loss, reminding us that war brings death – a lot of it. (And, unfortunately, we’ll likely see plenty of Ser Criston Cole’s unpleasant expressions too.)
If you’ve been watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, this new trailer – released shortly before the season finale of that show – highlights how distinct it is from House of the Dragon. Luckily, there’s space for both series in the world of Westeros! We all love seeing dragons in action, and we’ll get another dose of that when House of the Dragon returns in June after its break.
