As a die-hard fan of House of the Dragon, I can barely contain my excitement as we approach season 2! The recent episodes have been nothing short of thrilling, with Rhaenyra’s Team Black expanding their dragonrider roster through the Sowing of the Seeds event. This event, though bloody and tragic for many, has brought new life to our beloved Targaryens.
1. In House of the Dragon season 2, Team Black led by Rhaenyra has gathered a powerful team of dragon riders. The Sowing of the Seeds ceremony, where citizens of Valyrian descent could claim dragons, was chaotic and proved tragic for many. Yet, two newcomers, Vermithor and Silverwing, have joined Rhaenyra’s side, which might alter the course of the Dance of the Dragons, giving an edge to Team Black over the previously dominant Greens.
In the second season of House of the Dragon, we encounter several “dragonborn,” illegitimate offspring with Valyrian heritage, who exist in abundance despite the ruination of Valyria. The Targaryens claim their authority to ride dragons based on their divine lineage, setting them apart from other powerful houses within Westeros. Episode 7 unveils a surprising truth: one doesn’t necessarily require pure Valyrian blood to master a dragon, thereby challenging the established beliefs surrounding the bond between rider and dragon.
All the dragons the Blacks have
In episode 7, the Black team had more dragons than the Greens, but their young and inexperienced team – comprising Rhaenyra, Jacaerys, Baela, and a few others – were not battle-hardened enough to present a significant challenge against Aemond Targaryen’s dragon Vhagar. This situation required additional riders like Daemon and his dragon Caraxes, who have been largely unruly throughout season 2.
Following are the dragons and their riders of team Black,
- Syrax – Rhaenyra
- Vermax – Jacaerys
- Moondancer – Baela
- Caraxes – Daemon
- Seasmoke – Addam
- Vermithor – Hugh
- Silverwing – Ulf

In Episode 6, Addam from Hull declared ownership of the Seasmoke dragon, which was bonded to Laenor Velaryon. Rhaenyra proposed presenting dragon eggs since Addam came from a humble background. In Episode 7, Hugh secured Vermithor, and Ulf obtained the Silverwing dragon, expanding the Blacks’ team of dragon riders. With Daemon possibly rejoining their cause, they would now have seven riders.
Team Black’s dragons that have died
1. In the course of the Dance, Rhaenyra’s dragon contingent has experienced a loss of just two dragons out of their original seven. Notably, Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre, though alive and recuperating, was subdued at Rook’s Rest. Additionally, in the season 1 finale, Arrax – a young dragon associated with Lucerys Velaryon – was slain by Aemond and his dragon Vhagar, marking the start of the conflict. At that time, Arrax was one of the tiniest dragons among them.
1. Maelys, under the command of Rhaenys Targaryen, was an exceptionally swift dragon, boasting a reputation for speed unmatched among others. Despite being smaller in size compared to other dragons, her bond with Rhaenys surpassed that of any other dragon and rider partnership during the Dance. In a one-on-one battle against Vhagar, she inflicted harm on Aemond’s dragon and would have escaped had it not been for the riders leaping onto her as she was exiting the fight.
Dragons that are still unclaimed in House Of The Dragon
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the recent addition of three mysterious dragons in episodes 6 and 7! These elusive beasts, known as Grey Ghost, Cannibal, and Sheepstealer, are the focus of riders’ relentless pursuit in a book-based adaptation of the Sowing of the Seeds. Grey Ghost is infamously evasive, while Cannibal leaves grisly reminders of its presence through human remains in its lair. On the other hand, Sheepstealer was eventually claimed by a rider.
In House of the Dragon, it’s uncertain if Grey Ghost and Cannibal will make an appearance since they aren’t mentioned in the source material and no one lays claim to them. Regarding Sheepstealer, however, the show has been subtly hinting at its introduction through Rhaena’s storyline in the Vale. The discovery of burnt sheep carcasses suggests that Rhaena will tame Sheepstealer in the season 2 finale instead of raising her own dragon from the book. A notable difference is that Nettles, who rides Sheepstealer in Fire & Blood, seems to be absent from the TV adaptation.

How powerful are team Black’s dragons compared to Vhagar?
In episodes 6 and 7, three dragons without riders join the battle, yet there are more unridden dragons surviving. Three specific dragons, Grey Ghost, Cannibal, and Sheepstealer, are pursued by riders based on the book’s “Sowing of the Seeds” storyline. Grey Ghost eludes captors, Cannibal marks human remains in its den, and Sheepstealer gets claimed eventually. However, each dragon’s tale undergoes changes for the TV adaptation.
1. During the Dance, Vhagar – the biggest dragon – stands as the only powerful ally for the Greens. Meanwhile, Sunfyre and Aegon are still healing from wounds sustained at Rook’s Rest. Tessarion, a young dragon ridden by Prince Daeron Targaryen, Aemond, and Aegon’s younger brother, is mentioned in Episode 7; however, he has yet to make an appearance on the TV series. It’s anticipated that Tessarion will show up during season 3.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In the grand game of dragons in House of the Dragon, the Greens currently have only three dragons left in their arsenal – Vhagar being the mighty one, but Sunfyre injured and Tessarion still young and inexperienced. Meanwhile, the Blacks boast an impressive seven dragons. With two powerful beasts like Vermithor and Caraxes leading Rhaenyra’s forces, the Greens are finding themselves at a disadvantage. They must now adapt and innovate, exploring alternative strategies to counteract this growing threat.
