‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Finale Disappoints Fans, Described as a Season 3 Trailer: “We Deserved Better”

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of epic storytelling, I must say that the conclusion of House of the Dragon’s second season left me feeling like I just watched a two-hour-long teaser for an upcoming video game expansion pack. It was akin to being promised a thrilling quest in a fantasy realm, only to find myself stuck in a tedious tutorial level, with no immediate reward in sight.

As a longtime fan of Game of Thrones, I have to admit that my expectations for House of the Dragon were sky-high. Having followed the original series closely and devouring everything related to A Song of Ice and Fire, I was eagerly awaiting this prequel. However, the conclusion of season 2 left me feeling rather disappointed.

In contrast to the frequent discussions about war, season 2 surprisingly lacked any actual combat. If not for the Battle of Rook’s Rest, the entire season could essentially be described as a prolonged series of meetings, interspersed with occasional dragon-related events.

“The part of the season that has attracted the most criticism is that Daemon hasn’t been very active, suggesting that the showrunners might not have known how to make use of him effectively this season. This could be because giving Daemon more screen time would require more action scenes to be filmed.”

Viewers observed that season 2 served as a preview for season 3, and what a captivating teaser it was! We’ll surely need to hold onto this anticipation until at least 2026, given the lengthy gap between seasons 1 and 2.

While it may not come as a surprise, given that the series is rooted in the book ‘Fire & Blood’, it’s important to note that this particular narrative, ‘Dance of Dragons’, is not the central focus of the book. Instead, it delves into the broader history of the Targaryen dynasty. Approximately half of the book, around 50 pages, touches upon ‘Dance of Dragons’. As a result, there are relatively few events to retell and adapt, forcing the showrunners to stretch out the narrative as much as possible, leading to an abundance of filler scenes.

As an avid fan, I’ve noticed that the initial season moved at quite a brisk pace because it compressed around 20 years of events leading up to the infamous Dance of the Dragons. Now, as they delve into this significant event on screen, you’ll discover that only a handful of battles were detailed in the source material. Consequently, they won’t be able to portray all of them in a single season.

In the previous reports, it’s stated that a significant fight initially scheduled for season 2 will now occur in season 3 instead. Consequently, the skirmish that resulted in Rhaenys’ demise represents the sole action we’ve witnessed so far this season.

You can check out the reactions of fans yourself, and subjectively, I agree with most of them:

Did I just watch a 70 minute trailer for Season 3? #HouseOfThedragon

Worst fucking finale I’ve ever seen

As a dedicated fan of Game of Thrones for many years, I must admit that the final season left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Having eagerly anticipated each new episode, I found myself longing for the passion and emotional depth that had characterized earlier seasons. Instead, it seemed like every week was just one big negotiation, with little substance or excitement to keep me engaged.

That was the greatest 70min trailer 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m extremely frustrated by the finale. The Lannister scene felt like such a waste of time. What was the point of including it? I can’t believe they chose to focus on that when wrapping up the series. It was a disappointing episode, especially given its significance as the finale. Sigh…

they really could have wrapped the whole series up in 2 seasons.

That was rather underwhelming, considering the build-up we’ve experienced over an entire season, only to find out that the events of this season don’t lead into the next one for quite some time. I feel a bit misled. 😕
