House of the Dragon: How Does Aemond Die In The Books? Find Out

As a dedicated fan with countless hours invested in the world of Westeros, I can confidently say that the tension between Aemond Targaryen and Rhaenyra is reminiscent of my own familial squabbles – only with dragons and crowns instead of holiday dinners gone awry.

In House of the Dragon Season 2, it’s Aemond Targaryen who stirs up discord and potentially leads his kin into conflict. His brother, Aegon II, is currently recuperating from wounds inflicted by him. Given his role as the series’ coldest antagonist, viewers are left pondering when Aemond might face his demise. The answer to this question can be found in George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, which serves as the basis for the show.

In the final episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, Aemond takes command of the Green army, pitting them against his half-sister, Rhaenyra. But, he unexpectedly finds out about her hiring of three extra dragons for her forces, which makes him less secure than initially thought.

In Fire & Blood, Aemond remains in control at King’s Landing and incites the Greens to wage war, yet his overconfidence proves to be his undoing. Following Daemon’s departure from Harrenhal, Aemond seizes the opportunity to claim it. However, this absence from King’s Landing gives Rhaenyra and Daemon the chance to capture the city. This leaves Aemond with only Harrenhal as a stronghold, which ultimately becomes his downfall.

In the skirmish overlooking the God’s Eye lake near Harrenhal, Daemon engaged in combat with the formidable dragons Aemond and Vhagar, the mightiest beasts in Westeros. It was a location where Daemon had been forewarned by Alys that his life would end. Caraxes clung to Vhagar, providing Daemon an opportunity to assault Aemond with his weapon, Dark Sister. In a decisive strike, Daemon fatally wounded Aemond by thrusting the sword into his unseeing eye, and both combatants plummeted thousands of feet into the God’s Eye.

As a passionate fan of House of the Dragon, I’ve noticed that the show has introduced some modifications compared to the original book, which might impact the Battle Above God’s Eye’s final outcome. Yet, it seems unlikely that these changes will drastically affect the destinies of characters like Aemond or Daemon. It’s intriguing to note that the potential renewal of House of the Dragon could stretch the war, keeping characters such as Smith and Mitchell in the series even beyond the season 2 finale. This prolonged conflict may not reach its climax until the series concludes, but when Daemon utters the words “You. Me. Harrenhal,” it’s reasonable to expect a significant event. The writers might also explore ways to further extend the war.

On August 5th, the last episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 will be broadcasted. The trailer for episode 8 hints that everyone is gearing up for the decisive battle that will decide who rules the Seven Kingdoms. Rhaenyra aspires to fulfill her father’s wishes by claiming the Iron Throne, while Aemond and his allies are concentrating on safeguarding their position and addressing any lingering animosity.

As the Dance of the Dragons unfolds, I find myself leading my forces with three dragons under my command, stronger than ever before and eager to take on Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar – the largest in existence. I encourage my troops to act swiftly while we maintain our advantage. Meanwhile, at King’s Landing, Aemond presents Halaena, who is still grappling with her loss as a mother, as a new dragonrider for the impending battle. With a strong defense in mind, the Regent seeks to protect the throne. Halaena’s dragon, Dreamfyre, has been relatively idle due to her domestication after marriage to King Aegon. However, she appears to be finding her wings again, demonstrating improved skills as a rider.

The trailer additionally offers glimpses of vessels traversing and a castle ablaze, subtly suggesting the epic Battle of Gullet. It remains uncertain whether the concluding episode will depict actual battles or simply focus on preparations and boastful displays.
