Horror Director Oz Perkins’ Role as LEGALLY BLONDE’s Dorky David Will Always Have a Place in Our Hearts

Regardless of the profession, everyone has to begin their journey somewhere, and often, the starting point is significantly distinct from the final destination. For instance, Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key were renowned for their comedy brilliance through their show “Key & Peele”. However, few could have predicted Peele’s future as a horror directing maestro or Key’s success in musicals. Similarly, Oz Perkins, recognized as a horror auteur for movies like “Longlegs” and “The Monkey”, initially made his mark as an actor. Surprisingly, one of Oz Perkins’ earliest roles was in the popular 2001 comedy film “Legally Blonde”.

In the movie, Perkins portrayed Dorky David Kidney, a student at Harvard alongside Elle Woods played by Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde.” For those unfamiliar with the film, Elle Woods is a wealthy sorority girl from California who strives to get into Harvard Law School to demonstrate to her former boyfriend that she’s serious enough. At Harvard, she feels out of place among her classmates, who often judge her harshly due to her fashionable attire and cheerful demeanor. Throughout the story, Elle realizes she truly wants to be there, makes new friends, wins a significant case, and achieves success, all without needing her ex as motivation.

In the movie, I, Dorky David – a name that hints at my social awkwardness and mismatch with peers – find an unexpected friend in Elle, who treats me unlike your typical popular girl. Standing tall at 6’4, sweet David is a beloved character among viewers, with Oz convincingly portraying his discomfort due to his height, amplifying my anxiety at times. A moment that stands out for me is when Elle intervenes, helping me project an air of coolness.

After playing various minor roles, Perkins penned his debut film, “Removal,” in 2010. However, it was with his first major directorial project, “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” in 2015, that he truly made a name for himself as a writer and director. Despite being the son of Anthony Perkins, who famously portrayed Norman Bates in “Psycho,” Oz Perkins needed to establish his own reputation within the industry and genre. He has undoubtedly done so by carving out his unique niche.
