‘Home Alone’ Director Chris Columbus Admits Some Sequels Were ‘Really Bad’

Chris Columbus, the director of the original Home Alone and its sequel, has expressed his disappointment with the franchise’s subsequent films. He feels they didn’t measure up to the quality of the first two movies.

I was really fascinated to hear Chris Columbus talk about ‘Home Alone’ recently. He was chatting with Macaulay Culkin for The Hollywood Reporter, celebrating the film’s 35th anniversary, and he definitely didn’t hold back about how he felt regarding the later sequels. He seemed pretty frustrated with where the franchise went after he’d moved on, and it was interesting to get his honest perspective.

Columbus apologized if his words were offensive, but stated that the Home Alone series really declined in quality after the third film. He described Home Alone 3 as the best of the subsequent, less successful movies.

Following the success of the first two Home Alone movies, the series continued with new installments that didn’t involve the original director or actor. Over the years, these included Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, The Holiday Heist, and the latest release, Home Sweet Home Alone in 2021.

Columbus has voiced his thoughts on this topic before. Back in January, he told Entertainment Tonight that revisiting the original series was a bad idea. He stated, “I believe trying to recreate something from 35 years ago is a mistake. It’s best to leave it as it is.”

I was really excited to hear Macaulay Culkin talk about potentially returning as Kevin McCallister! He had this cool idea about Kevin being all grown up and maybe even dealing with some tough family stuff of his own. He even joked about him being on the other side of the booby traps this time! It sounds like it could be a story about him reconnecting with his own kid, which I think would be a really sweet and interesting direction for the movie to take.

Even after considering a lot of different suggestions, director Chris Columbus isn’t convinced a new ‘Home Alone’ movie will work. He believes it would only be successful if the original actors, like Joe Pesci and Dan Stern who played the robbers, returned – but he’s skeptical that they would, given how much time has passed.

He explained that the success of a movie like this heavily relies on the actors involved, and that’s something you can’t easily recreate with a different cast.
