With December here, movie fans have four new Hollywood films to look forward to in theaters worldwide. This week’s releases offer something for everyone, with genres ranging from heartwarming family stories and dark comedies to intense war satires and scary slasher films.
Goodbye June (UK theatrical release)
Starring Kate Winslet, Toni Collette, Helen Mirren, Timothy Spall, and Johnny Flynn, this Christmas family drama is directed by Kate Winslet and will be released on December 12. It’s in English.
As a lifestyle expert, I often see how the holidays can be a really powerful time for families – and sometimes, a little complicated! This film beautifully captures that. It’s set during Christmas, and follows four siblings who come home to spend time with their mother, who isn’t well. Being together forces them to deal with old hurts and unresolved issues. Honestly, it’s a story about how the season can amplify everything – both the good and the bad – and how each of us has to come to terms with grief, learn to forgive, and truly understand what family means.
Ella McCay (USA and India theatrical release)
I’m so excited for this new film! It stars Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Ayo Edebiri, and the incredible Woody Harrelson. James L. Brooks is directing, which is fantastic news – he’s a master of the comedy-drama genre. It’s all in English, and it’s coming out on December 12th – mark your calendars, because I know I have!
In 2008, a lieutenant governor found herself dealing with personal struggles and increased duties when the state’s long-serving governor was chosen to join President-elect Obama’s cabinet. Suddenly, she had to rise to the occasion and take on the responsibilities of governor.
Atropia (Limited theatrical release in US, Australia, and New Zealand)
Featuring Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner, Zahra Alzubaidi, Tony Shawkat, Jane Levy, and Chloë Sevigny, this war satire is directed by Hailey Gates. It’s in English and was released on December 12th.
The movie centers around a hopeful actress who lands a unique job: playing the role of ordinary citizens in a training exercise for the military. These citizens are all from a made-up country called Atropia.
Silent Night, Deadly Night (Limited theatrical release in North America)
Starring Rohan Campbell, Ruby Modine, David Lawrence Brown, David Tomlinson, and Mark Acheson, this horror film is directed by Mike P. Nelson. It’s in English and was released on December 12th.
This new slasher film is the second remake of the 1984 horror classic, Silent Night, Deadly Night. It follows a 2012 reimagining of the original and is the seventh film in the series. It aims to update the franchise’s frightening story for modern audiences.
