Paramount+ just dropped a thrilling new trailer for its upcoming series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, offering a sneak peek at the perilous situations aboard the USS Athena.
Premiering on January 15, 2026, the series centers on a new group of Starfleet cadets – the first in over a hundred years – as they learn the ropes and prepare to become officers in the 32nd century.
A new preview shows the starship Athena under attack by the villain Nus Braka, portrayed by Paul Giamatti. The Athena, which also serves as a traveling campus for Starfleet Academy, is in danger as Braka seeks revenge on its captain, Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter.
The video also includes Robert Picardo playing the Doctor, tending to injuries, and wrestler-turned-actor Becky Lynch assisting on the ship’s bridge.

Set after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, this new series follows a group of Starfleet Academy cadets as they face challenges both in training and on real missions in space. The cast includes Holly Hunter and Gina Yashere as Lura Thok, the ship’s first officer, alongside newcomers Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard. Familiar faces from previous Star Trek series, like Tig Notaro, Zoë Steiner, and Oded Fehr, also appear.
I’m so excited for the first season! It kicks off with two episodes on January 15th, and then a new episode will come out every week until March 12th. The show really follows the journey of these cadets as they learn the ropes aboard the USS Athena – it’s amazing because this ship actually functions as both a training vessel and a fully operational Starfleet starship!
