As a devoted fan who has followed Yellowstone since its inception, I must say that the news of Kevin Costner’s exit has left me with a mix of emotions. On one hand, I understand the need for actors to move on and pursue other projects, but on the other, John Dutton’s character is the heart and soul of this show.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Christina Voros, who helmed four of the final six episodes of Yellowstone, discusses why John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, remains crucial to the show despite his upcoming departure. With the much-awaited finale episodes on the horizon, Voros shares insights into how the character’s presence continues to shape the storyline.
She informed the media outlet that his role was crucial, stating, “John Dutton continues to be the heart of the story.” However, she chose not to reveal specifics, explaining, “Disclosing more might jeopardize all the efforts put into editing the scripts.” Later, she confirmed that Costner’s character would maintain its position as the head of the Dutton family, and his influence would persist throughout the series.
unexpectedly, the actor chose to leave the TV series, taking everyone by surprise. While some speculated it was due to creative disagreements with the production team, Costner himself did not confirm this. Instead, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the storyline in an interview with PEOPLE. He asserted that his actual motivation for leaving was because the scripts weren’t up to par.
As he shared, the show was on hiatus for 14 months without any response from anyone regarding his actions versus inactions. In June, he publicly announced via Instagram that he wouldn’t rejoin the “adored series.” He acknowledged the impact of the show on him and expressed his feelings: “I can’t help but wonder when someone will speak up about what I did versus what I didn’t do.” Later, he clarified that he adored the series and wanted his fans to know that he wouldn’t be part of it anymore.
Regardless of its highs and lows, the cast is content with the way Yellowstone series is wrapping up. Luke Grimes, portraying Kayce Dutton, expressed his satisfaction to Entertainment Weekly about the show’s finale. He stated, “I couldn’t be happier” and further commented that it’s a fitting ending for each character. The final episodes of Yellowstone season 5 will air on Paramount Network on November 10 at 8 p.m., ET/PT.
