14 years after their hit “Hips Don’t Lie” dominated music charts globally, Shakira and Wyclef Jean took the stage together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the song’s release. On May 6, Shakira donned a red dress and reprised her iconic dance routine that went viral, while Wyclef wore a white hat during their performance.
As a devoted admirer, I took center stage alongside another artist in an arena blanketed with sand. Live musicians and backup dancers accompanied our performance. The song we performed was initially released as the lead single on Shakira’s reissued album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2. In no time, it soared to international fame. On June 17, 2006, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and continued to dominate charts in more than 18 countries, as per Billboard.
On platform X (previously known as Twitter), the duo’s performance was highly commended, with their song being described as a ‘universal hymn.’ One user posted, “Two decades have passed, but it remains a universal hymn! Shakira and Wyclef rekindled the heat just as if it had never cooled down!” Another commented, “Shakira and Wyclef continue to radiate energy. Even after 20 years, Hips Don’t Lie feels as contemporary as ever.
In a 2014 interview with Women’s Health, Shakira shared the concept behind her song. “When a song is finished in the studio,” she explained, “it’s like taking it out of the oven, and it’s ready when my body starts moving, specifically my hips.” She would tell her musicians, “My hips don’t deceive me! Are they moving? They’re not moving! So this isn’t finished yet.” This is how she came up with the title.
Initially known as “Lips Don’t Lie,” the track was initially meant for a get-together of The Fugees. However, following their disbandment, the song found its way to Shakira, who played a key role in transforming it into the worldwide hit that it eventually became.
Following Shakira’s appearance at the 2025 Met Gala, her performance is scheduled to take place. Additionally, she is busy getting ready for the North American segment of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, which commences on May 13 in Charlotte, North Carolina. This tour has already made more than USD 70 million from 11 shows in March.
