Hilary Duff Reveals Which A-List Co-Star She Was Seriously Afraid Of on Set: “She Was Mean To Me”

Hilary Duff shared that she felt intimidated by Jennifer Coolidge when they worked together on the 2004 film, A Cinderella Story.

Hilary Duff, known for her role in “Lizzie McGuire,” told Page Six what it was like working with Jennifer Coolidge, who famously played the villainous stepmother Fiona in a recent version of Cinderella.

Duff, 38, shared that it’s a joy to watch Coolidge’s career blossom. She remembers being both impressed and a little intimidated by Coolidge’s bold and captivating presence as a teenager.

Hilary Duff remembers that veteran actress Coolidge, who was 64 at the time, fully embraced her role on set and was quite stern with her. This made Duff, who was around 15 years old, feel intimidated. “She really played the part of the evil stepmother and was a little scary,” Duff explained.

You know, Hilary Duff actually told me something fascinating about working with Jennifer Coolidge. She said Coolidge was so convincing in her role that Duff had to constantly remind herself it wasn’t real life! She literally had to keep saying to herself, ‘Okay, we’re just filming a movie, it’s just a movie!’ It’s wild how immersed Coolidge gets in her characters.

Mark Rosman directed A Cinderella Story, which was written by Leigh Dunlap and also featured Chad Michael Murray and Regina King.

This movie follows two friends who meet online and decide to finally meet in person at their high school Halloween dance. It came out on July 16, 2004, and although critics weren’t thrilled, it became a beloved cult classic, earning $70.1 million worldwide on a $19 million budget. While it received a low score of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and 25 out of 100 on Metacritic, audiences gave it a positive ‘A−’ rating according to CinemaScore.
