Hideo Kojima, known for games like Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, recently discussed the role of AI in game development. He believes AI should be used to assist developers, not replace the creative work of people.
Kojima explained that while many creators use AI for inspiration, he sees it as a tool to help him work faster. He plans to remain the primary creative force, using AI to improve his efficiency.
He believes AI can handle repetitive and time-consuming tasks, ultimately saving resources. Kojima envisions a collaborative future where he works *with* AI, rather than simply using it as a tool. For example, AI could automate tasks like translating and syncing lip movements across different languages, allowing his team to concentrate on the more creative aspects of game development.

Many other game developers agree. Rebecka Coutaz, who leads Battlefield Studios in Europe, explained to BBC Newsbeat that they use AI early in the development process to free up their creative teams. However, she stressed that human designers and artists are still responsible for creating everything in the final game, from the story missions to the multiplayer levels.
Fasahat Salim, design director at Criterion, agrees with this idea. He believes AI isn’t something to be worried about, but a helpful tool that can make their work better. “We need to find ways to use AI effectively in our processes and see how it can help us create even better games,” Salim said.
Hideo Kojima’s perspective shows how the gaming industry is changing, with AI being viewed as a tool to help developers, not take their jobs. It’s about collaboration, not replacement.
